Ok so I dont think I like it but I dont tend to like any of my self portraits. I'm not sure about the B&W or the message the image sends as a whole. what do you guys think?

Not Too bad an image to start with. It show some style. You cropped nice and tight, the board gives great splash of color.

Try this, balance your exposure so that the person is not so dark try to keep the exposure to a range of 1.5 stops from the hottest part of the image. This looks to be about 3. I like the back lit hair, I like the hatchett lighting on the face. Crop out the board lower left, and tighten up the framing, too.
