So I was actually shooting a wasp last night but due to my ghetto lighting setup wasn't able to really pull off the best shots. What came out better was a few shots of the EF 35mm f/1.4L lens... Using the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and some Kenko extension tubes, along with a 580EX flash all mounted on a tripod. I was really just goofing around, trying out the tubes.

A ring light may be in my future, and likely a light tent as well.

And of course, the wasp that started it all:

Thank you! I don't care for the slight CA on the cap shot, but was too lazy to fix in Photoshop. :)

I don't recall the exact tube(s) used as I was swapping them in and out quite a bit. It was either the longest of the three or all three of them... My bad.

I was shooting at f/22 for the most part - if you click on the images it will bring up the full-sized version, along with the shot details.

I didnt notice the CA on that untill I looked at it again!! duh.. dont sweat it, its not too bad
Why do you think that came out on that nice lens? I am only asking because i am looking at buying!
Is that just a 'sometimes happens' type of thing??

It's only on the very right edge of two letters - this is an extreme situation which I think most, if not all lenses might have a little issue with...

Sure, it's easily fixed in Photoshop... I just wasn't so motivated. :)

But your'e right, it's fairly hard to see unless you scrutinize the image. I'm sure if I had better lighting rather than just a flash and three business envelopes I could've pulled off something better. Quite honestly, I'm surprised it looks half as good as it does.

I like the first shot, very nice lens (and image). What's "CA" that you're referring to on the lens cap image? I tried scrutinising it but had no idea what I was looking for and didn't see anything unusual.

Dave, I believe he is referring to chromatic aberration. Check out this thread.

Indeed. See the bright blue line down the right side of the last "N" for example? The problem is I believe in my ghetto lighting setup...

I had the flash atop the camera at a distance of maybe 1.5' pointed at the cap. Surrounding the cap on three sides I propped up business envelopes, just to add a little fill lighting. I did soften up the lighting on the flash by draping a sheet of toilet paper over the flash head (hey, it works). Any time you have such extreme contrast changes, you risk CA. Plus the optical formula was modified via extension tubes.

If I spent more time on the setup, I could very likely eliminate that hot spot.

In Photoshop you can manage it on importing the RAW file. You can also use "Replace color..." and replace the blues with greys. Or finally, sure - clone/heal.

I was really just goofing around, and I'm pretty happy with how my half-hearted attempt turned out. :D

So... how many tubes were you using?

I am thinking of getting one for ring pictures at weddings... but I am wondering how much closer can you focus with the 70-200is with one 25mm tube? Is it enough to do it, or would I need more than that?

Hey all you.. this was our thread...lolol just kidding..

I was actually wondering the same thing picturecrazy, i was going to add a canon 25mm extension tube to the 70-200 2.8, and try to get pics of the ring, and seat-card table.. so on, things like that. I think an extension tube would work good, instead of carrying around a whole nother lens for macro!!!

How much closer can you get with 25mm on the 70-200?

I take some measurements with each tube for you guys - just give me a little time.

You can definitely do it. I used a set of Kenko tubes, not the Canon ones (you get three in the kit).
