hy guys and gals

I will be purchasing a Rebel XTi mid next month (near my 24th birthday too!) and was wondering what lenses you guys recommend I start with?

A couple lenses I want so far are:
50mm f1.8
17-85mm IS
and if I ever have the money, a 70-200 F2.8 IS ( not anytime soon  )

Should I bother with the kit lens?? I'm thinking of getting the body + 50mm f1.8 instead of the kit lens. (I am currently shooting with a 50mm f1.8 on my Canon AE-1 and I love the narrow DOF on it)

I will mostly be shooting cars, some animals and people (parties, BBQs, outings, vacation kind of thing.)

is the zoom on the 17-85 enough? I currently have a canon A620, how is the zoom compared to that? (I am VERY new to zoom and the XXmm numbers)

Thanks in advance.

Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 is MUCH cheaper than the Canon version. It is a GREAT lens...

An excellent starter lens that will even bring you over the next stage, is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 with a constant, fast aperture, a good reach and excellent sharpness, and close-up possibilities. Not true 1:1 macro, but useful.

great link Dchemist!

Rhino, I will look into that

peter: what makes that different from the 17-85mm I posted above? (other than the constant aperture) would you recommend that over the 17-85mm IS?

The Tamron 28-75 2.8 is better built than the 17-85 IMHO. The lens is sharper as well.

Can I suggest you look in the Sell section of the forum? There are some great deals in there on camera bodies and lenses. I've bought 3 items there, and now, it's the first place I stop when shopping.

Sharper and cheaper, though it does not have IS and its reach is not as wide as the 17-85.

To me IS is not as important as wider aperture...

Lot of folks also seem to like the new Sigma 17-70, I have one but haven't had a chance to use it as yet so I can't say much about it myself. No IS/OS but it does have a faster aperture than the Canon 17-85 IS.
