If this lens has ANY characteristics of of the 85L, then it will be worth it to me.

I know of ONE already... $$$$$ :(

At the moment, my heart is set on a 30mm from sigma.

I agree Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is a sweeeet lens...

But... WHY....! It surely cannot be so significantly better than the 1.4 (apart from weather sealing which is a fair comment).

Image wise, it will surely be very, very close between the 1.4 and 1.2?

I think it will be very noticeably sharper at f/1.4 than the 1.4 itself. The focus will be more accurate, and the build a hundred times better. The nifty fifty feels like garbage..but so does the 1.4, compared to an L. This one will be metal vs. plastic, tank build vs. cheapy, contrasty vs. not, etc. I can go on..

When stopped down, yes. I mean wide open. I've never had a 50 1.4 (I've had a few!) that was anywhere near "too sharp" at f/1.4.

I'd like faster, greater focus accuracy and wide open performance than on my 50mm 1.4. Given how much I use my 1.4 I could justify buying the 1.2, it'd pay for itself for what I do. It's on my long-term list, though, there are many more lenses I'd benefit from more first and I'll only be upgrading after I get all of those.
