truly wide on your camera would be the 10-22.

Its the best WIDE angle for a crop body.

The 17-40L is wide, but as Dante says, the 10-22 is Ultra wide.

What do you want it for?

I have both - and while I like the 17-40, I think I prefer the 10-22. Have'nt had it all that long to really experiment with. 17-40 is a nice walk around lens, but the 10-22 works best in those really tight spaces.

The Canon 10-22 would be good for ya... Cheaper route is the Sigma 10-20mm

Unless you just have to have Canon, the Sigma 10-20 is well spoken of in reviews and is considered as being more bang for the buck at around $500US.
I was impressed enough with the reviews to order one recently.
Best of luck with what ever you decide on.

Another vote for the EF-S 10-22. I've never owned the 17-40 L, but there is a reason for that - it never impressed me on a 1.6x crop body.

Have Fun,

Rick

17-40 makes for a good walk around lens that is wide enough to do landscapes. Remember that not every landscape shot must be super wide.

As well as the 17-40 there's the 17-55 f2.8 IS. IS can really hel at times where you can't use a tripod but if you need ultra wide the Canon 10-22 is great :-)

Canon also makes the 16-35 f/2.8L....I drool over that one everytime I bump my ISO up past 400 on my 17-40 f/4L...
