I vote for Canon 10-22

2 shots, fireworks by 350D, sea shot by 30D

I've had the 17-40L. Wasn't wide enough
I've had the 10-22mm Was wide enough, didn't feel like it could take much punishement
I now have the Tokina 12-24mm. Seems sharper than my 10-22mm was and is built like a tank. GIven the choice between the three I definitly choose the Toki over the other two. Plus it is a constant F4

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

I would say get the 10-22 but if you plan on a full frame camera anytime soon go with the 17-40

Canon also makes the 16-35 f/2.8L....I drool over that one everytime I bump my ISO up past 400 on my 17-40 f/4L...

16-35 f2.8L is something else
I strongly HIGHLY recommend it to wealthy fortunate people;)

It looks like the OP currently has 28mm on the wide end, so the EF-S 10-22mm would fit in really nicely. I used one for a weekend, and loved it. It's so wide that if you tip the camer down just a little bit, you will get your toes in the shot.

Wide enough for you?

I'll never get rid of my 16-35 f/2.8L. It's one heck of a great lens on my 20D and will be on the (someday) 1-series body.

Well, the Canon 10-22 it is... Now I'll sell my Canon 75-300mm and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 MKII to get some money and make some room in my camera bag...
