Actually it is my only shot of one and I am very pleased to add it to my list. It was taken in the rain ,late afternoon handheld 1/125 f 5.6 iso 800 . Thanks for looking .

GREAT shot.. It's an all natural setting and you got the whole side of the head.. Very nice..

I always see them perched on telephone poles.. When they're in the woods, they're usuall too far in to shoot :(

Nice setting, pose, composition and nicely exposed. These are such great birds and I saw one a few weeks ago being chased by a Sharpshinned but thats another story....Nice shot Chris.

You are lucky and this is a nice capture. Once I saw two of these in the deep of the forest and could not take a decent shot of them, even at ISO-1600 due to lack of light and hundreds of small branches in the way. Only had my 100-400 with me and that is not a low light lens. :(

What a nice shot of the pileated woodpecker. I have only managed to get one or two shots of them as they tend to take off on site. Love the setting with the green colors in the background.
