I'd like to hear some comments and opinions about what people think of this lens now that it's back in circulation. Searches I did resulted in alot of hits on the pre-fix era lens. I realize it isn't an L grade lens, but is it a good value for what it is? Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

Sep 27, 2006 18:20 | #2 I had this lens. It took great, sharp photos. I ended-up trading it for an L lens but for a reason other than quality. I thought, incorrectly, that the lens wouldn't fit on the 5D I was purchasing which turned out to be wrong. I'm sort of a bonehead sometimes. The second reason was because I didn't like the way the lens extended when zooming. Also, when I would walk around with the lens attached, the lens would fall to its extended position. Getting back to quality, I thought the lens took tremendous photos on par with an L lens and I appreciated the IS very much. Flickr - Life of David

I wanted to wait until Canon resolved the issue that they were having with it. So far I'm very happy with the quality of the images I'm getting with it. I plan to take a trip out of town to the zoo and I hope to get some good shots to share this weekend... The IS on the longer focal lengths is great, and at the price I can't complain. The rotating and extending while zooming is the downside, but that was not a real issue to me. I think it's hard to beat this lens for it's value dollar for dollar IMO.... Greg

If absolute build-feel is not your top priority, this could be the lens for you. I like mine quite a bit. Be sure to read the sticky at the top of this forum, especially the later pages as I believe post-recall copies are being reported as excellent.
