How useful is a 17-40 if you have a 24-70?

I might be nuts for thinking this but I think I might keep the 17-40 L that I use most of the time and try out a Sigma 24-70 DG lens. Instead of $1400 bucks like the canon version its only $600. I am not sure I would use the 24-70 L enough to spend $800 extra.

Yeah I know the 24-70 L is the best out there but from the reviews I have been reading the Siggy doesnt seem that bad of a lens and the price is pretty nice too.

Am I nuts?

No you aren't nuts, especially if you aren't sure how much you are going to use it...

Here's one with a 17-40mm:
QUOTED IMAGE

And one with the 10-22mm:
QUOTED IMAGE

Personally I think it's crazy how far away things that are 2-3' away actually look at 10mm. Now that is WIDE!

*Edit* I wish I had rented them both at the same time so I could to a real comparison. This is just an idea.

Ha Ha, you look like a giant comapred to your daughter.....

The beauty of L lenses is that they maintain a strong resale value - so you could always sell it and not really lose much money in the process.

I paid $699 for a brand new 17-40L a few months ago but I'm having hard time selling it for $580 and it has not even been used yet so I highly doubt they have higher resale value than any other lenses

$580 is highish for a used 17-40L.

after rebate and shipping mine came to $589.

Try eBay people pay what seems like 20% more for things on there as they do on a message board. Then again, after their fees you are basically back to the same you'd get for it on a message board like this one or FM.

I paid $530 US TOTAL for mine, including S&H to Canada from the USA. It is in mint condition, and as sharp as they come. Sorry to hear you dont need it at all.

thanks cjm,
I think ama keep it. I loved this lens to death and when I sold my 350D with it I missed it so much. So I went out and bought another one at their full price.
