Okay, so I've been working my way up into more professional lenses as money becomes available. Here is a shot from my Sigma 24-70 EX.

What do you think - is it sharp?

I think the sharpness is good, but the background is cluttered. Perhaps you weren't concerned with that and just working on sharpness.

it looks pretty sharp to me!

Not bad. She is cute. In PS adjust the levels then do a quick smart sharpen or USM then you will get sharp... I like Dante's crop as well...
