hmm, i wonder where we can find out what they are shooting with. i would have thought that they used combination of 1DmkII and some medium format cameras for the the studio and on location work...

Not sure where he got this info but this is where i read it

You know people that i don't want to confuse myself at all
XT or 30D (1.6x crop)
1D MarkII or N (1.3x crop)
1Ds Mark II (Full Frame)
these are 3 or 4 cameras are the best 3 together for all kind of photography.
1 is 8, second is 8, so the third is the combination = 16
Just when i will add 1DsMk2 or 3 then i will say bye bye more bodies as i completed bodies series. I will not let myself to ask which camera to get, if i can have money to offer it then i go for it, if no money then HELL forget it.

From a 300D to a 20D to a 5D to 1Ds to a 1D (and tamrons/50 f/1.8s to a slew of Ls) in less than 2 years*. Someone definately got the fever didn't they? ;) It's like you have a B&H Photo at your finger tips :D

(*may not be 100% accurate ;))

Bingo, lol!

Lightstream is apparently guilty as charged, too ;) Forget about keeping up with the Joneses (hey, that's my name)... try keeping up with the POTN'rs ;)

Yes exactly, very guilty   *hides latest foray into 1D territory*

Didn't Dante have the 1DsMkII, and not even just the plain 1Ds? Besides, his glass collection makes mine look small. :p

Snir: exactly....that is the way to fly.... you and your 100-400 tempting me ;) (no more temptation now that the budget has been spent, therefore no more glass)

Blonde that is just the answer i was kinda looking for. So give me your opinion. If image quality if first and foremost for me no matter what i shoot, but i want to be able to shoot some sports as well and even then IQ is number one priority. Basically i want to shoot the whole gamut but IQ is the number 1 goal, sounds like i need either a 5d or a 1ds mark II. Ive seen 1DmarkII photos though and cant see how 5D could be better. How do you get better IQ than sports illustrated? What i need is to be able to go to a site and compare pictures taken with the 1DmarkII and the 5D. My heart wants the 8.5FPS but im afraid of what i might be missing in IQ. I really need to be able to compare them to make a sound decision. Is that possible on any websites that you know of?

You won't be missing anything on IQ. The MKIIN has a larger sensor than the XT so the IQ would be the same as if you cropped the 5D...it's fast and probably your best bet for all around photography with great IQ.

Franko515 wrote in post #2047980 (external link)
IIRC I read somewhere here on this forum that S.I. just got all 1DmkII N's

I read that too. I've owned the MKIIN and the 5D, If I shot more action, I'd have kept the MKIIN because I got fantastic photos with it (portraits included). The 5D isn't geared for speed but I am a landscape photographer and live for the details in the shadows (where the 5D absolutely shines).

No wonder you're struggling -- you're using bad glass. So your images won't be any better on a 1Ds ...

This is the problem. Plus, the rebel is a bit slow for action shots as well...but the glass is definitely the issue. Buy some better glass, there are several that aren't L lenses with pretty good IQ (I am unfamiliar with non-canon brands but if you hunt the forum a bit, there are several Sigma and Tamron proponents around here that swear by their lenses). As for canon, I'm personally familiar with everything in my gear list as well as the 85 f1.8 & the 100mm macro and they are all excellent lenses.

Yep I got 3 magic beans at market. Gonna plat them and see what happens! :)

Actually, I traded my 1dsmk2 for a 1Dmk2N and a 5D/grip. You see I wanted faster FPS for sports and the 4 fps of the 1Dsmk2 was not cutting it. Could not lose FF, so a FF cam had to be part of the deal.

Am I crazy or smart like a fox?

You're nuts. :D

But I think the new combo is much better. The 1D2N runs like a greased pig.

Good trade DK - best of both worlds there. Out of curiousity, what did you use the FF for? Studio work? If so, don't really need the 1Ds Mark II for that...

Dave

I love the look. The DOF fall of. Veiw finer Nirvana. Mostly portraiture.

I just found a 1Ds Mark II for 5200.00 with 10,000 actuations on it. Looks like in mint condition. I also found a 1D Mark II for 2350.00 the shutter actuation reads 100-6838. Does that mean 6838 shots?. Anyway Ebay has brand new 5D's for 2400. Is that 5200 too good of a price to pass up? Or should i pass up on it and get the 1dmark2 and 5D for 4800.00. Opinions please.

Very nice price on 1Dsmk2. 1dmk2 nice price too. Not sure on count. I really only have used CanCount for determining shutter clicks. If you need speed go 1dmk2. FF and big files, its the 1dsmk2.

In no way sirs was I questioning the trade, Dantes ability to use the equipment or his need for faster shooting (I dont know enough to do that). I understand the differences in the cameras as far as FPS and build etc. I just wondered if the IQ was that much different from 8mp to 16mp (dpi or whatever the term is  im clueless)

So the only difference would be print size?

Thanks for your response

Franko, dont let these guys get to you! ;) IQ IMHO is based on pixel count and the actual sensor. I found the 5d to have just about the right pixel density for AWESOME images. I am going to miss a 17mb raw. Being able to crop it in half and still have 8mp file to work with. I needed the speed of a N so I did a little research and found that 8mp can create very nice 19x13 prints with some cropping and even larger. I wont have the WALLPAPER option any more, but typically I printed only 8x10 at largest. I think IQ is alos based on correct exposure. So, be it 16 or 8 mp, or 12, all cameras can yield stunning results and awesome IQ.

Dante, some of the recent shots I did at the ghost town were over 16mb raw...

Tell you the truth, right now i own a Rebel XT and i have never been really happy with it. I'm not a professional yet but aspire to one day be. I want the 1dsMarkII because i have 2 sons that are little league football players and i want to follow them thru their athletic years with fabulous photos. After the disappointment i have had with my 8.2 mp rebel XT i am afraid of hanging my hat solely on another 8.2 MP camera, otherwise i would just go with the 1dmarkII and call it a day.

it is the camera! No offense xt owners. But the 1 series bodies have 2 processors for AF and Imaging. There is a HUGE step up in AF and AI servo by going 1 series. It sounds to me like you dont need a 1dsmk2 but a 1dmk2 or 1dmk2N and some fast glass.
