I'd say that you're a crazy critter. (I'm not going to say "fox" - my reputation is already questionable from our last exchange about the rooster picture)

Really, I'm a big fan of the 5D. Traded my 1D2 for it and I'm happy. The only feature I really miss from the 1D2 is the capability to AF with an f/8 lens.

I think you'll be happy with this selection.

Tom, you are cracking me up! Ice tea all over my work PC! Thanks for the input. It was a sleepless night last night.

AF is not that of a 1 series, but it is real nice.

If the situation is very dark, you'll find that AF is better on the 5D. Big fat AF sensors do have their place.

I really thought that too..but I wondered if I was just prejudice (loving my 5D more than the MKIIN)....

D...I knew about variable Raw files sizes...I was just saying that mine have been taking up a surprisingly lot of room lately (just bought a 500gb external hd to handle them)...

Im sorry I got way off track, but this is really where i started and want to get back to it. I am kinda stuck on which way to go in regards to the following:
I just found a 1Ds Mark II for 5200.00 with 10,000 actuations on it. Looks like in mint condition. I also found a 1D Mark II for 2350.00 the shutter actuation reads 100-6838. Does that mean 6838 shots?. Anyway Ebay has brand new 5D's for 2400. Is that 5200 too good of a price to pass up? Or should i pass up on it and get the 1dmark2 and 5D for 4800.00. Opinions please.

minime9us - it would be a good idea for you to start a new thread on your shooting performance. I had an XT and while it isn't a 1-series camera, it is capable of shooting school football. Get a subject started on this and you'll get some help before you go out and buy a new camera.

Just off the cuff, set that XT to ISO 400, aperture priority, and set that tamron lens to f/8. Shoot with the light at your side or behind you as much as you can. Set the camera metering to partial. Use AI-Servo, and select the center focus point only. Hold the shutter button halfway and track the player with your center focus point for a half-second or so before you press the shutter the rest of the way to shoot.

I'm not familiar with the Tamron 200-500 lens, but I am familiar with the 100-400L. I know that the Canon zoom focuses quite quickly, but I don't know about that Tamron. Might be great, but might not.

You can place me in the "needed a larger hard drive' club as well. I got both a bigger external, and added a 250 gb internal to the old Dell. Maxed out at 1 gig of memory as well. I need more POWER!!

You'll never lose sleep as long as you have a 5D! Or a 1D II. Or both (both guarantees 8-9 hours per night).

Really, both are great cameras, and if you can swing it, having both is a good thing.

I did both those as soon as I got the 5D too ;) I had no idea how much space raw would take but you can't get me to go back to shooting jpeg unless it's a dire (run out of memory) emergency...and I had a 250gb external but it was filling up so time for a new one...

I got two 60GB drives, two 250GB drives and 1.5GB of RAM... Trust me, too much is never enough. I need more drive space!

Franko, dont let these guys get to you! IQ IMHO is based on pixel count and the actual sensor. I found the 5d to have just about the right pixel density for AWESOME images. I am going to miss a 17mb raw. Being able to crop it in half and still have 8mp file to work with. I needed the speed of a N so I did a little research and found that 8mp can create very nice 19x13 prints with some cropping and even larger. I wont have the WALLPAPER option any more, but typically I printed only 8x10 at largest. I think IQ is alos based on correct exposure. So, be it 16 or 8 mp, or 12, all cameras can yield stunning results and awesome IQ.

That's why I don't feel too limited. No wallpaper. Besides you can stretch the 5D image a little. Anyway when Canon comes out with the 22MP beast we KNOW you will buy it.. ;)

it is the camera! No offense xt owners. But the 1 series bodies have 2 processors for AF and Imaging. There is a HUGE step up in AF and AI servo by going 1 series. It sounds to me like you dont need a 1dsmk2 but a 1dmk2 or 1dmk2N and some fast glass.

Changing bodies and glass has a ripple effect. Upgrading from an P&S to an XT forced me to rethink my entire computer setup!

You bought it? What happened to eating ramen and water for the rest of your life? :):)

It's not so bad. I'll be eating ramen and.. well, at least I still have instant coffee to add some flavor to the water :p :p :p

Mark, the pixel density on the 5D is SWEET. OMG. It is like a mini 1dsmk2 with better noise at high ISO. for the other, can you say 8.5FPS!!

Yes it is!!! As a devoted 5D owner I can tell you high ISO performance is out of this world. I shoot ISO 1600 (keyword being PROPER EXPOSURE here), 1/6 seconds image stabilized, and it looks like ISO 400 from my XT.. now the XT is hopping mad!

8.5fps is drool-inducing good. Great points about the faster AF from a dedicated CPU, better AF sensor (Canon calls it TTL-AREA instead of TTL-SIR.. about describes it well), and the works. Can't wait for my 1D!!

As for missing your 1D2, buy it back, have both. ;)

This is a known issue, I recall Chuck Westfall saying that the tradeoff for the high performance Area AF sensor in the 1D was the slightly lower sensitivity.

This is actually a perfect compromise. We have the 1D for action-stopping daylight work, and the 5D with its ultra-clean-high-ISO and better AF sensitivity precisely for those situations when we need to shoot in the dark.

A while back i was sold a mkIIN for 2000 (brand new) I sold it for 3000 because at the time I was thinkin, "8mp for that much money i need more" so I sold it to get a 30D (was waiting for the photowachamagigga show) now i feel like I want the mkIIN back, but this time i will have to pay full price

Franko, I think you did really well...did you buy other equipment with the profits? If you don't need the 1D series, you'll do just fine with the 30D...it's a good camera. You might shoot with the 30 and see if you find it has limitations you don't like. Anyway, it's was a pretty good profit margin.

I think 16MP in a FF is too many I think the 5D's 12 is perfect for Noise and picture quality.

Just my 2 cents.

Just like the 1.6 crop maxis out at 8.2 MP
