A pic I took a while ago. Added some shop to it. What do you think?

Nice shot, poor title. Are you implying his life is wasted because he's a soldier? This isn't a political question, just trying to understand the motivation for the title.

I have to disagree with bwolford. I think the ambiguity of the title lends well to the shot. It leaves the shot and title both open to interpretation, whether a soldier's life is wasted, whether he feels the lives of his comrades have been wasted, or whether war is general is a waste of life. The shot is great, especially contrasting the crystal blue of the eyes with the general dirt and mire of "war." Excellent shot and composition.

Then again, maybe I like it because I was a Marine.

If a picture was meant to invoke thought and emotion, you did it. Well done.

I was just trying to understand the emotion intended to be protrayed by the OP. I probably shouldn't judge the title until

  1. I understand the intent
  2. I determine if I agree with the intent
If he's wasted because he is tired, it could be fitting. If he feels he's wasted his life because of circumstance, it could be fitting as well. As you say Eric, he could feel that something's a waste because of the reason you give.

I just hope he's not implying the guy's a waste because he's a soldier. That would be a very poor choice in poor taste.

It is a fine photograph. The eyes show life and therefore hope. Perhaps there is hope beyond the "waste" he's feeling at the moment. The photograph does spark emotion, but the title shouldn't overpower or direct it, unless it's done for a reason that I'm trying to understand.

I like this shot - I'd like to see a shot with his eye just a smidgen less blue as I think it stands out just a little too much but I'm not sure if that wouldn't take away from the focus. I really like the mood of the shot. Good work.

I like the effect and the emotion the soldier is portraying. We wonder what he is thinking. Awsome shot.

Good photo. The contrast between the drab color of the helmet and uniform and the bright eye grabs the attention. The photo does look like it has been burned in quite a bit in the face area.

As to the title - definitely the OPs choice but it is quite easy in this day and age to create controversy with political suggestion in titles/images. If you are an activist it would be hard to separate your photographic leanings from your beliefs. I personally think that images that convey a strong opinion without a title are more effective. And harder to take.

This photo would be just as good if it were just titled Soldier. It just wouldn't have drawn as much comment.

I agree that the portrait and the PS work are excellent. I also agree that the title limits the expectations of such a poignant photo.
