Limited to crop bodies = EF-S/DC/DX.

'nuff said.

Mostly agreed, but don't forget Di-II :D [FWIW, your statement above is a different issue.]

Oh yeah I forgot about Tamron altogether. Oops.

'nuff said.

You need to modify that slightly:

Limited to some crop bodies = EF-S
Works on all crop bodies = DC/DX

The distinction that LightRules was trying to point out to you is indeed a significant one IMHO.

I know the difference. My point wasn't even about crop bodies. It was about the Full Frame pointlessness of these lense, regardless of their designation. The topic seems to have strayed from that...

I have both and if I were on a budget and only had the 50, I would be happy with it. I love my 35, but it's not worth busting the bank to get it.

it'll probably be awhile until i get one...just trying to decide what to save up for

I find the 50 f/1.4 too tight on my 5D! Lovely IQ on the 50mm lens but for me I will get the 35 f/1.4 soon...it's a real beauty! Good Luck.

oh no! lol, 50mm tight on a 5D...i hear the 35 is just awesome though...how about 24 1.4?

Both lenses take similar pictures, going by resolution alone. In the end, you'll be hard pressed to tell which lens shot which picture. The bokeh will be different, as will the DoF because of the brighter aperture and increased number of blades on the f/1.4L - so it will have an edge.

The f/1.4L improves on the f/2.0 lens in several ways:

- L build and quality
- Brighter aperture
- USM vs. AFD AF
- 8 blade aperture vs. 5

If those points are important to you, then yes it's worth it. Otherwise I'd say no.

I'd almost call the 35L the perfect lens, but I'll leave that for the Mark II... When it's weathersealed and offers focus distance info like all the new/refreshed L lenses. The CA could be handled a little better too, but all things considered it is what it is.

a fair appraisal of the 35L D Negative, i didn't know the f/2 only had 5 aperture blades, is it only the l's which have 8?

Typically, yes - L lenses have 8 blades over their lower-end 5 blade counterparts. I'm not sure offhand if other, non-L lenses have 8 blades (like say, the 50mm f/1.4 vs. the 50mm f/1.8). I know the latter definitely has 5 blades.

this might sound crazy...but just throwing out the idea. should i sell the 24-70 and replace it with the 35mm?! i would have a 35 and 50 prime...plus my 70-200 and 10-20. do u guys think its worth it, to gain that speed, but lose that range a little.

There was no way I was giving up my beloved 24-70mm, but I knew I wanted a fast prime for both the low light capability and the IQ... Sprang for the 35mm f/1.4L as well. I doubt I'll be picking up anymore primes short of 300mm and beyond, except for maybe a fisheye. The upcoming 50mm sounds nice on paper, the 85mm isn't my thing and I got the 135mm covered with the wonderful 70-200mm.

Zooms have their place and are mighty convenient. If you favor the convenience or the benefits of a bright lens, only you can decide and it depends mostly on what you shoot. Having one good prime is necessary, IMO. But that can be 35mm, 50mm, etc.

yea i really dont want to get rid of it. it stays on my camera the most. its mighty convenient to have the zoom. the primes that i would like to pick up would be a 35 and 85 sometime in the far future. im just dying for that 35 right now cause it would be a good addition, for what i do.

this obviously goin on my 30D and 35 will be around 50mm, but how does the 24 stand up to it?

I commited a blasphemy the other day.

A friend asked me to take some pix for a feebay auction -I used the 35L... :)

[Whats that? Could be the sound of multiple forehead slaps heard in the engineering section at Canon Optics...]

This is the auction with overkill 35L pix:

the 35 obviously is much better than the 50 overall.

then again, you have to consider that is why the 35L is MUCH MUCH more expensive than the 50.

Hi,

I just bought the Sigma 30 f/1.4 EX DC HSM and I love it. It is sharp, has good contrast, and great colors. I have had no focusing problems less some operator errors :)

This lens has caused me to re-think my views about 3rd party lenses. I have learned that Canon does not have to be the only game in town. I bought this lens to use for portraits and group shots at weddings. It is 48MM on the 1.6 crop body.

Here are two samples:

a. Elaine and Bagels: 1/640th, f/1.4, 30mm, ISO 100.
b. Old Towne Alexandria, VA: 1/400th, f/8, 30MM, ISO 200
