I've read a few things online about being a little soft at f/2.8. True or not, we know how the internet can be.

Anyway, I'm sitting on the fence with lens purchase. I've seen a few here, and pbase has garbage on finding good low f-stop shots. Anyone up to the challenge of posting up some various shots at f/2.8?

I will add that some of the pics I've seen at higher f-stops have looked very good! Thanks y'all!

edit: and f/2.8 and closer subjects is what I've been reading about.

I am contemplating the purchase of this lens too. I looked at many samples at the link below. Hope it helps. There is also commentary there too.

I don't find it soft at all, but I find I try to push the SS too much at times - I seem to forget people move, and try a shot at .5 sec. resulting in some soft shots - can't blame the lens for that.
I can't seem to find any close subjects at 2.8, but I will look and edit later if I find any.

I mentioned in my post above that pbase doesn't have much shot at 2.8 :(

Just looking for some owners to do some close ups at 2.8.

I've not really had chance to use mine 'properly' yet, but here's one of the first few I took.
Handheld (but sat down) 1/80th @ f/2.8, 55mm. Straight from RAW converted in DPP, no PP.

Hi,

Here are a couple of shots from the 17-55MM EF-S IS I made earlier this year. I used DXO on both of these to post process for color and noise enhancement.

1. Crash shot is at 35MM, 1/60th, f/2.8, ISO 400. I also used the on board flash. <-- this accident happened around the corner from my house...fortunately no one was hurt but the brand new car was totaled

2. Crowd shot is 17mm, 1/20th, f/2.8, ISO 1600.

I love this lens and keep it on my black dRebel 350 as my walk around lens.

Syntrix,

I have had my copy since June and I have not seen any dust problems. The lens does extend on full zoom so in the wrong environment I guess dust could get on the barrell and then be pulled inside when returning to the WA view???

That said, it has not been a problem for me.

Canon may as well supply this lens with a tube of superglue cos I cant ever imagine it coming off my camera.
