Oh man, I'm quite upset.

Here in Kentucky, there is nothing to photograph. Even though I live in the largest city of Louisville, there still is nothing worth the time.

The city is too small. Not enough buildings and lights on at night to get my desired effects. Combine this with the simple danger factor (of gangs and bad people) of shooting there at night and you have a real problem.

"What about the farms and horses" you say? Honestly, its fairly ugly. The farms arent nice like you'd expect and the horses are all too far away or hiding.

Yes, here in KY we do have some fairly nice sunsets and sunrises but thats about the only way to get a descent picture.

I'm interesting in hearing from people in similiar predicaments. (or ideas)

Yes, well not to sound obsessed or anything, but I do enjoy going for a drive out in the country and scouting out spots that would make great pictures. I found this little valley about 10 miles from my place. The section of road leads to the top of a high hill on a bridge overlooking the valley and all the homes. Very nice at sunset. But, I need more than one place!

I kid, but I'm also serious.
If photography is a serious enough pasttime and you live in a place that isn't condusive to it, why not move to a place? Quality of life is important to me.

While going macro is one possibility, an approach that might require a little less significant shift in perspective could be to just look for better compositions within the broader landscape. As I look around the photo sharing forums I'm continually impressed by the shots I see here. Many of them could be taken in almost any city in the world. The shooters here do an amazing job of seeing things that most of us overlook.

I think it's all about looking for your compositions.. seeing things and learning to translate them to a photograph. I have been 'uninspired' at times but most of the time you can shoot through it.. if your having trouble finding things to shoot you might consider joining the photo day thread that's ongoing. Has proven to be a help for some and a great weekly exercise..

Well, its constantly on my mind. I am ALWAYS looking for scenes when I drive for spots to lurk to catch a great pic. A friend said this: (actually its a quote)

"The aim of photographic art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. What was any art but a mould in which to imprison for a moment the shining elusive element which is life itself- life hurrying past us and running away, too strong to stop, too sweet to lose. Every creator painfully experiences the chasm between his inner vision and its ultimate expression. He is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work."

As my teacher once said...
open your eyes and you will see.
Anywhere you are on earth there are 1 or 2 awesome pictures waiting to be taken and thousands of good to great ones, all within 100 feet of where you are.
Hunt them and stalk them.
Open your eyes and your mind.

i'm sure you can find some great downtown shots during the daylight safe hours.

clear your mind, go out and just shoot shoot shoot

then go home

begin your pp and take some time to use some different pp's. you know i took some photos and i thought they were useless, then i ran like midnight black sepia action and then added a little ethereal glow and i actually had some great stuff!

and if that doesnt work, then have a few appletinis and try it again!!!! :p
