Sounds like a great set-up. I've been reading a recent post over on the Sports sharing board about the same combination. Some of the posters have some nice images.

Don't forget to get shots showing the player's faces :)

I may going to watch and shoot a soccer match on saturday (tomorrow) at night, the only lens i can use for that purpose is my 70-200 f2.8L IS, but i am not sure to add 1.4x withit, or should i use my 100-400L instead?
ofcourse using my 1D markIIN, someone told me to bring 2 cameras and 2 lenses or more, any recommend?
Congrats for you 1.4x coming soon.

The amount of zoom (telephoto) you may need will most likely depend on where you're shooting from. At our local youth soccer games, the spectators (and photographers) can stand just off the sidelines. That means there will be times where the players will be close by so you may not have enough wide angle on the zoom lens to pull back to get those shots. Maybe take the two lenses so that one is for wide angle shots and the other for the zoom action. Two cameras would do the trick.

Thank you very much.
the match is between our government department against another gov. department, so we are not guest we are official, and they told me that it is easy for me to go in and be close to the players besides sidelines. and i hope to meet one guy who can shoot with me as i know someone helped me to shoot in a training course before.
I will see how the results will be (that if i go there tomorrow).

Hi, I have the 70-200 L f2.8 IS... Also the Canon 1.4 & 2.0 teleconverters... Primarily shoot soccer...

Night-time under floodlights = don't bother with the x1.4 nor x2, unless the floodlights are top-of-the-range-can-you-tell its nighttime....

Day-time - decent light = x1.4 can add just enough distance to the 200, to capture a good proportion of the pitch. You do lose a tad amount of image quality, i.e. you don't quite get the individual hairs on the legs of players.... But the distance means you get more chance of capturing action going around..

My dream, is the 300 or 400 f2.8... Does this L'addiction ever end?

350d, 70-200L f2.8 IS USM, 300L f2.8 Prime.. And some i'd not want to talk about....

For Sale: Kids -> Will swap for 400mm f2.8 prime... Or a D1 Mark 2n (Machine Gun).. Just kidding... Have no kids left, all sold.

Go AWAY from L
I tried my 70-200L IS and it was good but not greater than primes, so for my sports shots i need 300 or 400 f2.8, DAMN, i can't get rid of L infection.

On a bright day, at f/5.6, you still have AF, right? I have the 70-200mm f/4L and I generally use it at my son's soccer game. However, I used a 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom that I loaned out to my father so that he could try the 70-200mm f/4L on his 30D.

The images from the L are much sharper, but the extra distance that the 300mm gave me was nice. Having the 1.4x TC on the 70-200mm f/4L sounds like it would be exactly what I am looking for when shooting the soccer games.
