Now, I still own (and love) the 1D, but I just wanted to pick up a point-n-shoot for those times that I just don't want to carry "the beast" around. I searched high and low and decided on this little baby... a Ricoh GR Digital. As you can see it's black, and beautiful. The lens is a single focal length f=5.9mm (28mm on a 35mm equivalent) with an aperture of f/2.4 . I took a photo of the GRd next to my 10D just for size comparison.

Here are a couple of shots taken with the GRd... it has a 8Mp sensor and can shoot in RAW format (DNG is thefile extension I think). This camera has auto, manual, Aperture priority, and scene modes. I shot these photos in Manual mode and jpeg format. The photo of the faucet was taken at 100 ISO, Av=f/2.4, Tv=1/250. The photo of the chairs was taken at 64 ISO, Av=f/2.4, Tv=1/125.

I would have to say that the in camera processing isn't all too bad with this little camera. It's gonna be interesting shooting with a single focal length p&s. I bet I'm gonna be learning some new stuff.

I'll probably still carry my 1D out, because I'm so used to having it with me. There are just times I find it embarrassing to carry something that BIG. It does get you noticed... if the size doesn't, the noise from the shutter will.

The GRd takes nice photos, and still allow me the creativity. And i love that the lens is a wide open f/2.4. Combine that with an ISO up to 1600 and i shouldn't need flash all too much. It's still a p&s, slow on the shot, and takes 2 sec to write a jpeg file onto the sd card. No dslr killer, but better than nothing when you're a 1D-less photographer at the time you see something you want to shoot.

It's just like any p&s I've used in the past... slow when compared to dSLR.

Sweet. I have the S230 and my wife has an S2 IS. We use them just for fun and walking around when we don't want to lug big cameras.
