ok, seeing as how the front element seems to be recessed, would a hood be necessary with this lens? should i just dump the 20 bucks for the adapter and hood from amazon?

I bought the hood. I'm pretty much a hood freak because I don't like filters (except for CPL and ND). The hood buys me protection of the front element. Oh, and it blocks out sunlight sometimes. "Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I was photographing last friday, at night. Testing: 17-85 IS, 17-40 L, and 70-200 L (f/4). All had a lot of flare... But all had hoods. 17-85 and 17-40 had filters... but 70-200 didn't, but it did flare a lot... Very suspicious. At least, I think a hood would be a good buy. I have it, and it makes the lens so nice a funny. EOS 5D Mark II | EF24-105 f/4L IS | EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS | EF200 f/2.8L II | 580EX | Manfrotto 055xProB + 808RC4, and 679B

Sep 30, 2006 18:17 | #7 I got a hood with mine when I bought it from Hauff. Not sure if it actually does anything or not but it certainly makes it look less whimpy. So if it works or not, I use it anyways. Also bought me a cheap Canon UV filter for this lens because the lens is so hard to clean that it make sense. Christopher J. Martin
