Wednesday night I had a pretty fun night. I was able to shoot at ISO500..yes, 500.

Here are a couple of shots. My apologies for the last one. I had to black out the face as that band "the headliner" has first crack at licensing. I'll let you guess who it was though! :) The first band is the band Shinedown, and the third image is a nice look I got from the man Rob Zombie himself. :)

No PP/correction on any of these, straight out of the camera, minus the crop on Rob.

sort of looks like sully erna from godsmack? I'm pretty sure you can show the face though as long as the pics are not for commercial use or sale. One of the pros can correct me on this if I'm wrong.

Third one is great. Yeah, it does look a bit like Godsmack's lead from here but could be anyone ;)

#3 (!) and 4 are nice. On the first two the lighting is a bit boring.

I'm one of the pros! I shoot for Gibson Guitars artist relations on contract, published by Focal Press, record labels, etc...and on this particular night I was shooting for Godsmack's Publicity Firm, and they have first rights. So, no, sorry I had to block it out! But, yes! Good guess. :)

Thanks, it was kind of odd. I was down in the DMZ (media pit) and right in the middle of a song he stopped, on queue, gave me a stare down pose and kept on rocking. He's been around the block a couple of times and knows how to work it!

Geez, wouldn't you know it, I too, find #'s three and four to be my favs...
Two is a great close up picture, however as a stand alone, with out the others in the set, it makes me wonder what it's all about...
Pic # one is a stand alone picture and works just fine without the set...the colors are a bit flat though...
Obviously, there is plenty of room to PP and enhance to the hilt, if you prefer...

Yeah, regarding the lighting, that's what happens when you go on before Rob Zombie and Godsmack! :D I threw them in there to just document the night.

For some reason #1 looks a bit desaturated. #3 is nifty. I wouldn't have put up at all if someone wanted an exclusive license ... but I generally don't have that issue, even when shooting for BMR. Nice to see you posting!

I agree on the firt two. It was really a product a lot of white stage lighting and a westward facing ampitheatre during sunset, it washed him out a little until the sun set enough to change the ratio of key lighting. That's the cross they carry for being the first band. :D

Shot number 3 was a reslult of me having access to the entire show. It's nothing more than a grab I can throw in my portfolio. I'm still decideding on whether or not to present it for solicitation.

Regarding image number 4. The licensing terms give me full copyright. So, I'm not worried about posting a destructed image. I just wanted to show a quick look at what I had been up to lately. I have a couple hundred of Godsmack that I am going sort through on my virtual light table yet this weekend.

I'm going to be pretty here in the near future. I had thought that the concert season was going to slow down a little, but there are a lot of big fall lineups that I will be at. I had hoped to focus a lot more time to studio/creative work..hopefully, I'll still be able to. I have a 4 model/2 band studio shoot this next weekend.

Thanks for the comments! Hope to be sharing more soon. :)

Yeah, copyright and $5.00 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks! Until I license an image for compensation or shoot on assignment for Big Machine Records or Nashville to You Acoustic Radio Tours or the casino the Copyright is very, very close to useless ... it is keeping the clients happy that counts. I try very hard not to do anything for which I have to rely on Copyright ... I have a lot terrific images on my website and not one says Copyright and I am happy to have folks use them ... but if they sell them I want half the money. I have come to believe that this business is about establishing relationships and networking and is very little about Copyright and rights and intellectual property. I'd rather have money than rights! ;)

I guess that's where I differ, you are too trusting. :) How do you know how much money you have lost by not protecting your rights? They are one in the same really, IP is money. Plus, how do you know how I was compensated? :) As a general rule I always retain rights to the image, always..regardless of the amount of payment. I license images, I never sell them outright and neither should anybody else.

I'm not really up for going to go into discussing rights management (it's a Saturday night), it varies from one photographer to another on what they feel comfortable with and what precendents have been set by law and industry. It should be noted that every photographer helps define what is "accepted business" for the entire ecosystem. Just because one photographer isn't concerened with rights doesn't mean it's not impactful. I'm speaking generally here.

I also think this isn't the right audience to bore with rhetoric that doesn't apply to the majority. For anybody interested on the details of rights management, I'd recommend reading the ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography - 6th edition (I am an ASMP member). Chapter 7 goes into reasonable depths on the topic.
