Dear friens,
Pl. share your views regarding
Sigma 70-300 APO v/s Canon EF 75-300 USM lens

They told me that this APO tech. is simillar to "L" of canon tech. A low dispersion coating.
Pl. share your views in this respect which one would be better. Both are simillar pricing.
Sigma has APO & canon has USM. How do U weigh them?

Regards,
Mukund

The APO is the best bet out of these two, the canon 75-300 is quite bad. if you want sample photos with the APO check the gallery in my sig, the majority are with that lens.

I'm still in the learner mode when it comes to dslr, I got the 70-300 APO dg couple of months ago and I am delighted with the quality. I find it a tad heavy at times. I'm guilty of a bit camera shake at slow speeds with this lens, I'm told faster shutter speeds help while handheld.
On the tripod it's superb.

I've posted a few pics on POTN if it helps you decide.

mukund2,
I haven't used the Sigma (I like Canon lenses on my Canon cameras) but what Ospi said

the canon 75-300 is quite bad

is very wrong to my eyes.

Here is a web page I made with a photo taken with the 75-300 (my cheapie lens) and the Canon 100-400L (my expensive lens) with 100% crops for comparison. (external link)

Here is a shot I took yesterday with the 75-300 lens

hello,
I just did a review of the Sigma 7-3 APO. BTW, I used the 75-300 USM from Canon and ended up returning it. Apart from the more silent AF, the Sigma trumps it in everyway. Check this thread:

A lot of Sigma lenses are better than their Canon counterparts, this is one of those cases, I never tried a 75-300 but I did have a Canon 55-200 & it was crap.

With Sigma you get a lot of lens for your money, I have the 17-70 & going by test results it beats every Canon in its price bracket & even some L lenses, I do believe the Sigma is soft at 300mm though, but this is normal for most lenses unless you pay a fortune.

Nick :-)

Sigma,
check photozone.de for reviews of both of theses lenses. The build feel of the Sigma is substantially better as well. They also include a hood and a bag.

I love the Sigma. I have had it for about 4 months now and I just love it. I'm attaching a photo I took this past Sunday at the zoo and this is handheld. I haven't had any complaints with this lens except it goes a little soft at about 250mm.

Very nice shot indeed, Sigma stuff is really growing on me, with the exception of the L lenses, the Sigma lenses beat any of the Canon ones on build quality & value for money, unless you get a dud they are so sharp!

Nick :-)

The Sigma has the best reputation of all of this type of lens. Excellent value for money too.
