Hi there,

here are some waterbirds you may not have seen before the beautifully coloured Purple Swamp hen and a Eurasian coot these are all on our local lake. This lake is smack dab in the middle of my town. I did a bird count this morning and we saw 65 different species including 3 birds I have never seen before. One was a bird called the buff banded rail a bird that has been seen now 4 times in 100years and it was magnificent to see and for a keen bird watcher very exciting.

The third shot here is a
cinnamin mutation of the purple swamphen, quite bizzare and quite pretty and quite often naturally occuring mutations pop up from time to time but ussually never make it due to being weaker or predators.

Comments are always welcome.

Regards Darren

Interesting colours in the cinnamin Swamp Hen. My local waterway has heaps of Swamp Hens, Coots and Grebes, but I can't say I have ever seen a Cinnamin Hen before.

Currently just a P&S, but watch this space.

Interesting colours. Are you over PP-ing? The backgrounds don't appear to be naturally blurred by the camera.

Hi Dale and Trace,

I try not to pp at all except a bit of USM after resizing. Dale I am itching to get a shot of a crested grebe where do you shoot?

Darren; These are interesting and nice captures as always. Love the color on that first bird, the Purple Swamphen! ;)

There's a series of waterways throughout the suburbs I live in (Narre Warren South & Hampton Park), in the south east of Melbourne.

Nice work Darren, well done.

I was down at a local waterway today and just about everything was too far away from us. So quite a lot of swamp hens a few coots, a few pelicans, and lots of black swans amongst others.

Hmmm......Doing a few searches via Google as well as the local council's websites, there seems to be very little in the way of informative websites that are current. Most delve into the minute workings of waterways on how they purify water on it's way to the bay and very little about the wildlife that has taken up residency.

I might have to get out there and take some landscape shots and create a website about them myself.

If ever you're thinking of heading out this way on a weekend, send me a PM and I may be able to show you around.

Dale that would be sweet to have a guide....

Waussie, I knew someone would see this and be confused, this bird has only ever been seen 4 times at my local lake....sorry about that.
