Earlier in the week I had posted a bit of a rant about my EF28-135mm USM IS lens and the fact that it was soft focusing

http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=221197

I'm curious about low light focusing with this lens. Has any one seen this lens, or rather any other lens flash the focus confirmation lights even though it is still out of focus. I was trying the lens out in my appartment with the lights dim, and the distance scale on the focus ring was reading 50 feet for the object it focused on. My appartment isn't small, but I can tell you there are no objects 50 feet away.

Note that this was happening while the lens was a 28mm. When the lens was zoomed in, the focus was much better. This leads me to using a trick I used to use with an older telephoto I had where you zoom in focus and then zoom out (hoping that the lens has consitant focus across all the focal length range). Alas I can't do this with my camera as it doesn't have one shot focus. :S Time to reinstall the hacked firmware I guess. I had uninstalled in when I found the soft focus issue, cause I wanted to eliminate it as a source to the problem.

my 28-135 focuses better in low light when I have my speedlite on with it's AF assist beam.

i love mine but i admit, its not the sharpest lens out there but, its got a great range and is, so i will give it a "pass" on sharpness for that! you can sharpen in ps and not worry about it!

My EF 28-135mm USM IS, is real sharp for macro photos...

The IS takes a second +, to set up and I've yet to master this feature...Without IS and with flash indoors, it is quite sharp...

Low light focusing might be a problem, as with most slower lenses, the sensors need time for appropriate readings...

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm not giving up on this lens yet The reach is great, and I have used it in other low light situations and turned out some pretty amazing pics with the IS on (ones that would have been a lot softer otherwise). I have the 580EX on order at the moment, so hopefully I will be able to see improvments once I start using the AF-Assist beam.

I'm sure then I'll be getting a lot of "You're flash didn't go off!" comments. "I Know! I didn't want it to!"
