FEL lock conflict w/Custom fn 04 AE/AF

Hmm I have set on my Rebel XT the custom function 04 to a setting of 3 - AE/AF No AE lock - so now I use the * for auto focus (because I use the Full time manual focus alot on my 50mm at f/1.4)

Problem is my 430EX uses the same * button to achieve Flash exposure lock - thus sharing the same button as my AF function. I cannot lock FE under this configuration.

Any ideas?

Edited: I found a post - it mentions I lose FEL if Cfn4 is anything but 0.
