Red Wattle Bird

Darren, a little bit soft but not bad nonetheless. It's actually a female. The male has wattles about two or three times longer.

you may be confusing it with the yellow wattle bird, red wattle bird males only have slightly larger wattles however as both sexes age they grow larger. I hope thi books I have are correct lol

That is my understanding of the Red Wattlebirds as well Darren.

I get heaps of them in my backyard, diving in and out of (funnily enough) the wattle bushes chasing insects.

I know the yellow wattle bird in Tasi have wattles an inch long but these not too big, but grow somewhat with age. Dale you may be interested to know I have a tip on where a breeding pair of powerful owls are and they have 3 young. As soon as I confirm they are still there I will send a map, they have been there for 7 years not and have bred 21 young!

Yep, just checked my book and your right. Second look and referring to one I posted some weeks back, I'd say it's male going by the vibrant yellow. The mating pair with chicks I photographed, the female definately lacks that amount of yellow.

These are the shots, if this works. Note how the wattles are longer. According to what I have read, the male I photographed is probably an older bird.
