lol @ the six pack! 1/500 - hmmm - that tells me that the ball was motoring, then. I was expecting you to mention speeds in the 1/100 range. You also mentioned using the 50mm. Do you have the 1.8, 1.4 or 1.2? Not that it would have helped a bit, I guess - half a stop (nearly) but much narrower DOF - especially at those distances. I guess there is enough light for the game - just not enough for the photographer. I'm always wary of using a flash - I reckon I would be a bit hissed off if a stray flash diverted my attention.
You've done well - ISO 3200 is a real bugger - when you get down that low you just know the light is bad. I have a whole dawn service shot at 3200 and, to get any useful ones out of it, I'm resorting to Neat Image to clean up the noise.
The coach, who also coaches at state and national level, has mentioned before that the spikes travel at the same speed that fast bowlers bowl. I guess to catch the ball in the middle of the court is the same as trying to catch the cricket ball in the middle of the pitch, but from about mid on. They've done a few speed camera tests. You don't get much of a chance to move when receiving the spikes. If it's not directly at you or arms reach then there is little chance of picking it up, at least at this level. The ladies on the court next door were a lot easier to shoot as the game was an order of magnitude slower.
I did run these through Neat Image as part of my PP. Starting to learn stuff here too, I rarely shoot this high and my skills in NI need a brush up. Up until now auto has worked OK for me. With these I needed to tweak the settings more to get better results.
I've got the 50 1.8 which I know won't cut the mustard for this type of thing. 50 1.4 USM has been on the shopping list for a while, but I've held off because of lack of real need for the extra speed and USM. I'll reconsider this if I end up doing more of this type of thing. I had the Siggy 30 in the bag with me but didn't try it. As you say DoF starts to become a real issue this wide.
One of the main concerns about the flash before the game was from the ref's. They didn't want to be blinded at critical moments. Oh well, it would be no fun unless its not a challenge.
