Thanks for the reminder ::John::, I had forgotten that Temora fell on my next weekend off. I'll talk to "her indoors" and see if she'll notice me missing. What day are you planning to go?

Re The military planes that you are to shoot would that be the Fleet Air Arm Airshow @ Nowra on May 6th?

Ok i'm now at the airport waiting for my boarding call to singapore where I will transfer to Beijing. Managed to borrow my cousin's BG-E3 battery grip so all is good :p

hvman, it was a cheap grip from link-delight on ebay. you can see pics of it here.

Basically the screws holding the plate in don't grip the thread anymore. So I'll prolly price a new canon grip in china and also singapore and see how it goes.

Talk to you guys soon and I hope i can get some nice happy snaps to share :)

That's what yer feet are for, mate ;)

Never be afraid to chip in - you will often feel ignored but don't sweat it - no-one else does and, quite often, you get replies...

Most of us tend to wander around the whole site so you are quite likely to see us 'out there'. If we post something we tend to be a bit proud of, we link it in here so others get to look and comment. The Brissy guys and gals are very active and you will see a lot of stunning stuff from them.

Good point....I guess that's why it's such a great learning lens as it makes you work for the image. I'll post here an there if I feel it's got some worth given that I'm just starting out really.

Hey Andrew.....welcome to the forums. I'm in SA but pretty far from adelaide (~4 hours) so not sure if I'd be of any help!?

That's the great thing about this place, does not matter where we are we can still get involved

Hi wrxflame,

The "cliquishness" is pretty much an issue of POTN population distribution and initiative I think. Us Newcastle people don't often organise anything, mostly likely cos we're boring sods (or is it just cos we're too busy ;)).

Hope you can get some POTN action going on in SA :-)

It's all good now, feel part of the Aussie bunch and just hope I can provide some value to the place

Hi Kinnon,

Good luck with the sale. I'm back in the market for a 10-22 but can get a new one from B&H for AUD$930 (with a hood).

FYI, my last 10-22 sold on eBay for $850 with hood and fancy filter last November.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... anyway, I hope you can find a buyer soon for a good price!!

Bugger hey.... Ahh well, might just put it on ebay and hope for the best! Unless you're interested in a second hand one Luke and I'll drop the price of it...

I bought the lens when I was only new to this forum and didn't know about cool places like B&H and DD photographics.....

You don't want two 50mms duncan? :P

Thanks for the offer, but I think you'll do pretty well on eBay if you include good high-res photos of it (and start low -- I started the 17-40 I'm selling at the moment at $400, it's already up to $720 with 2 days to go -- you'll pick up enough watchers to push it to what it's worth, I assure you). Better than if I talk you down to a price I'd be happy with for second-hand ;-)a

I paid way too much for my first few bits of kit too... know the feeling :-(

I shot a local A grade Volleyball team playing a visiting Papua New Guinea Team last night. A good friend coaches the local team and had asked me to shoot. He had organised so I could shoot from anywhere, with the only restriction being no flash. Shots are here. Be gentle it was my first time shooting Volleyball and boy is it hard.

Cool shots. Any new 'experience' comes with a steep learning curve and you have done extremely well. ISO 3200 and f/1.8 and the ball is still oof - the speed must have been really low? I see a chap on the balcony with a tripod - I wonder how he fared? (shot #6 in the second set). You've got a great set of facials there, too.

Thanks for the comments John. As an ex player you feel good when you can capture the action of a sport you like. I look at the last one of the second series and imagine myself following through withthe swing to spike the ball. :D

The guy with the tripod is a Professional Photog, he was videoing his son playing in the Dragons A grade side. We exchanged cards after the match and I'll send him some shots of his son. I missed the really good facials, where the ball hits the oposition in the face. Technical term for this is a six pack, ie the coach will buy you one if you manage to do this:D. There were two of these in the match which is rare.

I was at 1/500 for all of these, I guess I'd have to double it to freeze the ball but with the lighting I just couldn't get there. Might be able to swing a training session where I could use the flash and this might help.

lol @ the six pack! 1/500 - hmmm - that tells me that the ball was motoring, then. I was expecting you to mention speeds in the 1/100 range. You also mentioned using the 50mm. Do you have the 1.8, 1.4 or 1.2? Not that it would have helped a bit, I guess - half a stop (nearly) but much narrower DOF - especially at those distances. I guess there is enough light for the game - just not enough for the photographer. I'm always wary of using a flash - I reckon I would be a bit hissed off if a stray flash diverted my attention.

You've done well - ISO 3200 is a real bugger - when you get down that low you just know the light is bad. I have a whole dawn service shot at 3200 and, to get any useful ones out of it, I'm resorting to Neat Image to clean up the noise.

The coach, who also coaches at state and national level, has mentioned before that the spikes travel at the same speed that fast bowlers bowl. I guess to catch the ball in the middle of the court is the same as trying to catch the cricket ball in the middle of the pitch, but from about mid on. They've done a few speed camera tests. You don't get much of a chance to move when receiving the spikes. If it's not directly at you or arms reach then there is little chance of picking it up, at least at this level. The ladies on the court next door were a lot easier to shoot as the game was an order of magnitude slower.

I did run these through Neat Image as part of my PP. Starting to learn stuff here too, I rarely shoot this high and my skills in NI need a brush up. Up until now auto has worked OK for me. With these I needed to tweak the settings more to get better results.

I've got the 50 1.8 which I know won't cut the mustard for this type of thing. 50 1.4 USM has been on the shopping list for a while, but I've held off because of lack of real need for the extra speed and USM. I'll reconsider this if I end up doing more of this type of thing. I had the Siggy 30 in the bag with me but didn't try it. As you say DoF starts to become a real issue this wide.

One of the main concerns about the flash before the game was from the ref's. They didn't want to be blinded at critical moments. Oh well, it would be no fun unless its not a challenge.
