All good stuff - it's the challenge that makes it worthwhile, I reckon. One of the kiwis had a trot with high ISO shots last night - he did bloody well, too.

I have watched you Brissie guys and the stuff you are shooting - I reckon you should look at escalating the 50 1.4 - as a model lens, I love it. (Not that I saw anything wrong with the model pics you peeps were taking). Depending on the 'mood' I need for the picture, I can go tight DOF/low light/closeup or the reverse. Grain or no grain. Very versatile. I did a posed series for a lass a while ago where we lit it with candles. I used the 85 1.8 and the 50 1.4 - the 50 nailed the effect we wanted.

Neat Image - well, yes, I need to learn more with that, too. I downloaded the noise profiles for it - but I quite often find that I can batch the process fairly well and let it recreate the noise profiles per shot - then fine tune as required. I did a christening in a fairly dim country church. NI batch first then CS2 batch after I had looked at a sample and taken the readings for the adjustments I wanted. The client was expecting maybe 10 shots or so - they bought nearly 100. I am hoping for the same with the ANZAC Day dawn parade shots.

I've got the 50 1.8 which I know won't cut the mustard for this type of thing. 50 1.4 USM has been on the shopping list for a while, but I've held off because of lack of real need for the extra speed and USM. I'll reconsider this if I end up doing more of this type of thing. I had the Siggy 30 in the bag with me but didn't try it. As you say DoF starts to become a real issue this wide.

Hey Greg... you're welcome to borrow mine seeing my contax 50 f/1.4 isn't too far away. I suspect there's a bit of backfocussing going on too, so you could test that ;););). Honestly speaking, I've been using the 100mm macro a lot more and the 24-70 so this has become somewhat redundant ;)

I'm on the verge of sending it back to the shop I got it from for a warranty, so it may be good to get a 2nd opinion. Let me know what you think ;)

Cool, thanks for the offer Feng. Happy to help;)

Oh nice shots ed. Does this mean we'll see your trip just here just a little while after you've taken the shots? ;)

Nice shots Ed. Haven't seen the air that clear in BJ before, or at least not whilst I've been there. Keep 'em coming. I'll probably go to BJ or Shanghai or both in the next few weeks. Looks like the hot weather has really arrived.

Ha, I wish. Spend all of it on gear and just shoot locally. I'm looking going further afield, day trips, weekends etc.

That aside, I work of the Energex, the local distribution authority here in SE Qld doing Substation Design work. Apart of from the last 6mths, we've been super super busy so overtime has been a real bonus as far as photography purchases go. And we were told that as of about a week ago it's back on again, whooo hooo. Very hard to get qualified staff, and at the moment we are very bottom heavy. Know anyone with a Electrical background that wants to get into design work, CAD skills useful but not essential?

Yeah the weather is good here, alot of construction everywhere for the Beijing Olympics.
Most of my shots are happy snaps as I'm in tour and don't get to spend that much time alone and there are people EVERYWHERE!

Yeah I'll post the best shots I can manage daily here if you guys want. Going to Great Wall in about 30mins time :)

Hey Paul I'll be in Shanghai in about 17 days time.
In Beijing for a few more days before we travel inland.

I work in the IT area with some regional responsibilities which means I have to travel frequently. My favourite spot (from a photography point of view) is Japan. They have the most amazing electronics shops with whole floors devoted to photographic equipment with all models of DSLRs on display which you can pick up and shoot with (no CF cards) to test lenses and controls etc.

Ed - enjoy BJ and the Great Wall. That Wall is something else to behold. Hard to believe it could be built that way up and down all the steep mountains. Have the camera ready for the drive up there as it's a panoramic drive from BJ. Reckon you'll fill the CF cards there. So much to see and photograph and not just the wall and landscapes but the people, hawkers etc etc.

Shanghai is very different to BJ but just as photogenic.

Hi all. Am a new member here and posted an intor post and was directed here to what I believe is the "Aussie" thread.

Just a quick intro.

My name is Melody I'm 23 and pretty much been interested in photography my whole lfe. But's only just been recently that I've renewed my passion to start taking NICE photo's!

For my birthday I received a Canon 400d so I'm slowly but surely making my way through the manual.

I have already seen some amazing photo's on here and really look forward to increasing my knowledge and abilities.

Sorry for the essay!! :D

Hey Melody

Welcome (again). As I said in the other thread, there are a few Adelaide people around, too.

That's a great camera - as a birthday present, someone is spoiling you :)

Don't let all the other pictures around the place get to you - most of the people that take them are always willing to offer help to people like me that need it ;)

Enjoy the place, we all do.

Welcome to POTN Melody! Be careful around the 'gear' area of the forum. Spend too long there and you might start buying more and more camera gear... which quickly gets very expesive. ;)

On other news, I did the Sydney Airport airside tour with cadets today. I'm an NCO, so I was going to 'pull rank' if need be (:p) to get a good seat on the bus. I wanted some cool plane pics! When we got to the place, I found out that there was some stupid security directive that meant I couldn't take my camera airside. I had to store it in the boot of my commanding officers car along with 12-15 P&S cameras    . When I last went there, 2 years ago (as just a little cadet), we were allowed cameras but I had forgotten mine.

Oh well...

I've been looking, but does anyone know how to upgrade DPP? I've got v2.1 and I have seen references to version 3.0!

Andrew.

I think Dave (Choderboy) mentioned that a while ago (or we may have discussed it in a phone call). As I recall, the free bus that goes between Domestic and International doesn't ban cameras and you get much of the same views...

You can download it from Canon. If you have your copy already installed on your drive, the upgrade will install just fine.

Here is a link - fill in the form and have a look around (external link).

Welcome Melody. Great B'day present, and having the passion is a great drive... definitely nothing better than practice practice practice! :) Did I say practice?

I have already seen some amazing photo's on here and really look forward to increasing my knowledge and abilities.

Yeah tell me about it. I've been here a few months already, and it's amazing some of the things I see here on show, and the techniques etc.
