It's a pity it wasn't a real game of cricket. We might care if it was. :-P

And since when have kiwis been any good at cricket anyway?

I'm Welsh. Have you seen their cricket team.!!!

Hi All,

I'm Dan. I've been lurking here since the thread was on page 265 so I thought it was about time I said hello.

Hi Dan and welcome :)

Oh, I just wanted to know if it's bad form or not to ask a question of the forum after the first post?

Nah, go for it! :)

Did you do the course at Tafe? Did you find it very helpful? I did the small business management course here at the lismore tafe and I didn't really find it all that helpful, not sure if it was the teachers or just the course in general??

Just curious to see what you thought of it?

I'll catchup on the thread just as soon as I get real internet back... I can't see most photos atm (unless I wait about half an hour for them to load ) so I can't comment :(

Anyone got opinions on a watermark? I've had a few photos get used without my permission (attempting discussions re: that matter) so in future I think I'm going to start putting a little something on the low res photos I link people to just to prevent casual use...

and vertical

It's what I've come up with so far. I tried cloning it out and it wasn't that hard to do but I don't want to go overboard - it's more to stop casual use.

I'm going for something that still lets you see the photo but is present enough that the photo isn't really usable as is.

Any feedback appreciated!

Thanks for the welcomes and the kind words about the pictures.

The question I wanted to ask is about lenses (aren't they all). Much as I'm still learning with the kit lens I'd really like a fast available light lens to use mainly for pictures of my family and maybe for some landscape work. My two choices at the moment are the Canon 50mm f1.4 or the Sigma 30mm f1.4. As I'll be using it on the 400D I guess my focal lengths will be 80mm and 48mm respectively.

I've been trying the kit lens set to approximately 30 and 50mm and using my feet to zoom has been fine, just like using my father in laws AE-1 and a 50mm prime.

I guess what I wanted to ask was the opinion of any of you who have used these lenses and your thoughts on how they'd fit with my intended applications?

I'm very much a beginner to all this so If I've not been specific enough about anything, let me know.

Thanks.

Dan.

Current Kit: Canon EOS 5Dc, Oly Zuiko's: 24mm f2.8, 35mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.8 with a Nikkor 55mm f2 macro

Hey Kinnon,

I did the course through a some what private institution, it was a Certificate 4 in Small Business Management, its the equivilant to a Tafe course but run over 5-6 weeks as opposed to Tafe which was 12 months.

I found it more helpful than anything i have learnt to do with photography itself, it helped me set better goals, layout a proper plan for the business which will be attainable, ideas on marketing and how to target my specific market better. The difference (they told us) between this course and Tafe is that fact the final assesment was for us to complete a Business Plan, from what i was told Tafe doesnt do this, add the fact it was such an intense course as it was crammed in to 6 weeks you didnt get a chance to lose interest and for me it helped me stay focused.

It may have been your lecturers, our makreting guy was brilliant, finance not so much :) but he still made it clear enough to understand and learn just a tad boring :)

I would recommend anyone wanting to get in to business do something in the way of education, it cant hurt but it can definately help, the fact i have a plan and a set out direction is comforting for me now all i have to do is shoot and not worry so much about other stuff. Not to mention the contacts you can get from it, i have already scored 4-5 on going gigs which i would never had been able to prior.

Dan.

I just ordered the Sigma 30 for my 20D and can't wait. Do a search for user Toogy - he's been doing some lovely images (and a great variety) with this lens.

I have 50 1.8 in my bag, but I don't seem to use it as much as I thought I would. Sure did have fun playing with it when I first got it though ;)

Pretty sure this Sigma will get a work out coz I love what I'm seeing from others.

50mm is an awkward length on 1.6 crop cameras. I have a 50/1.4 and while it's optically superb and I'll probably keep it, I suspect it will see little use when I have a 28/1.8 or 30/1.4. I hope that helps!

Well I went Wide, ordered my Sigma 10-20 yesterday, got it this morning, loving this new view of things. Very solid lense to.

On another note, anyone heading over to Temora This weekend I'll be there Sunday.
