I guess if you need proof that it's worth paying the extra to buy off, say, qualitycamera, this would be it. I wonder how many more DD customers will receive your faulty camera ...

Serial number is 0000411334 - Owner info on camera now says - FAULTY SHUTTER !!!!!
Spread the word.

I have bought from Stu at qualitycamera - He's not the cheapest, but doesn't pretend to be. I got a cleaning kit that was short a few things. He was sooooooo apologetic on the phone and I had them next day by courier - Now THAT is service. I will buy from Stu again and recommend him no problems. I will be getting my filters from Stu when I can find the $$.

Thanks,

Yeah because of qualitycameras policy on lenses that screw up, id rather pay the extra like $200 just in case something does happen :)

need some expert advice - (should probably post this somewhere else but i wanted to try here first )i want to buy some lenses for my humble s3is - but i also want to be able to use these lenses when i eventually upgrade to a big toy (is that possible - total newbie at lense stuff). have read lots of posts but am still unsure of 52mm vs 58mm - what i want is a telephoto and wide angle (was looking at raynox - usa - anywhere in aussie instead??) and some filters (poloriser/neutral) - having read some of the posts apparently there is some vignetting(spelling crappy sorry too late ) when using the 52mm adaptors and lenses - but if i get the 58mm arent the filters the wrong size - i read somewhere you need to get step down/up rings??? am i on the right track - how common are 58mm and accessories - thanks all

My reading at this site (external link) would indicate that the S3IS has special lenses and any lens you do get for that camera won't be compatible with a dSLR (if that is what you are thinking of).

52mm vs 58mm - well there is also 67mm and 77mm - the lens, itself, dictates the filter size - for example, the standard 'kit' lens is 58mm - my 50mm and 85mm lenses take 58mm filters and my 70-200 and 100-400 lenses take 77mm filters.

Thing about vignetting... - if the filter is too thick, it may cause some vignetting as the lens will possibly be impacted by having another 3-5mm of length added to it. If you are looking at a crop camera (e.g. 350D, 400D, 20D, 30D) the effect isn't as likely as on a full-frame camera (e.g. 5D, 1DsMkII).

You can use step rings for filters - but it us better to step up than down because of vignetting issues. If you have a 52mm lens and use a stepup to fit a 58mm filter, you are making the diameter at the end of the lens larger and not restricting the amount of 'picture' seen by the lens. If you have a 58mm lens and use a stepdown to fit a 52mm filter, you are closing the 'hole' at the end of the lens and are restricting what the lens would normally see - and the edge of the filter is likely to be visible as a darkening at the edges (corners) in the picture.

Hope this helps.

Hmm... I'm going to be busy on the 5th as I'm doing a night duty the night beforehand and my final uni assessments are due in the following day so I'm going to be up to my ears in work there :p

The Dungog Show sounds interesting, though... very interesting... I'll have to see what work's doing around then but that might be an interesting jaunt :)

Ok this may be obvious to everyone else but YOU CAN PUT YOUR LENSES ON BACKWARDS! And take macro photos like that! How did I not know this before!? Finding this out has just made my day :)

I'm so excited I just have to post something :p

Full-sized shot at f/8 or f/4, I forget which:

Chip in my glasses, focus was a little off but it's so hard with such a thin DOF as I'm finding out:

Try it out, it's loads of fun.. to me, anyway :) I probably now have a heap of dust on my sensor but oh well, nothing a rocket blower won't fix :)

++ Btw, these were taken with the 50mm 1.4... they're pretty darn sharp at 100% too - the clock one was actually underexposed by about four stops and I only pushed it up three so it's a little noisy. Metering is way weird doing this.
