need some expert advice - (should probably post this somewhere else but i wanted to try here first )i want to buy some lenses for my humble s3is - but i also want to be able to use these lenses when i eventually upgrade to a big toy (is that possible - total newbie at lense stuff). have read lots of posts but am still unsure of 52mm vs 58mm - what i want is a telephoto and wide angle (was looking at raynox - usa - anywhere in aussie instead??) and some filters (poloriser/neutral) - having read some of the posts apparently there is some vignetting(spelling crappy sorry too late ) when using the 52mm adaptors and lenses - but if i get the 58mm arent the filters the wrong size - i read somewhere you need to get step down/up rings am i on the right track - how common are 58mm and accessories - thanks all

ingrid, you can't use the lenses from the s3 on a dslr, full stop. The lenses for the s3 are a screw in type. I made the mistake of buying both lenses, and then getting a dslr. If you are in any way semi serious about photography, and want to get better etc, save the money you would spend on the s3 lenses, and use that towards a dslr. I can't believe how much difference it made to my photography! Also, different dslr lenses have different filter threads. One of mine takes the 52mm, the other a 58 and also a 77! Bottom line, how much are you prepared to spend for your hoby? example, canon 400d, aprox $1200 body only, add about $400 for kit lenses, or get the lenses you want seperately, which is what i did. My initial outlay was $3000, but you don't have to spend that sort of money. Your 2 lenses for the s3 and tube will put you back somewhere near $500 anyway. I'd put that towards a dslr, the wide angle does not make that much a difference, but the wide angle on the dslr sure does!! Same for the tele!

Ok this may be obvious to everyone else but YOU CAN PUT YOUR LENSES ON BACKWARDS! And take macro photos like that! How did I not know this before!? Finding this out has just made my day :)

I'm so excited I just have to post something :p

...

Try it out, it's loads of fun.. to me, anyway :) I probably now have a heap of dust on my sensor but oh well, nothing a rocket blower won't fix :)

++ Btw, these were taken with the 50mm 1.4... they're pretty darn sharp at 100% too - the clock one was actually underexposed by about four stops and I only pushed it up three so it's a little noisy. Metering is way weird doing this.

I tried something a little different - and dustless earlier on in the year - there is a picture here on POTN somewhere of the results...

I put the 50mm on normally - and then held the 85mm on backwards in front of it!

To focus, I just moved the camera back and forward a bit, holding the lens in place and the camera with the other hand - it was a bit tricky but it worked.

I understand a filter thread double ended thingy can be purchased that (in my example) I can screw into the 50mm and then screw the 85mm on (using it's filter attachment thread)

Also - Ron Chappel here on the forum has actually reversed a lens and completed all the electronics so he can attach the lens to the body from either end. You will find it on a search under his name. He is the Aussie Mod here.

thanks kiwibloke and tina - i was really hoping that the lenses would be able to make the transfer accross to DSLR - oh well - Ive only had the s3is for 5 months and hubby would kill me if i told him that i now wanted a bigger camera - i'm happy with the s3is - so will stick with it and buy the lenses for it - i had my mind all set for the raynox 52mm lenses - until i read the shadowing issues and having to buy them from USA - if i didnt like them its a long way to return them. - back to the drawing (reading) board. (LOL)
thanks for your help
ingrid

Just wondering if anyone here was interested in a group buy for a shooting table from this guy

If we get numbers, he is willing to lower the price. No idea how much yet until we get numbers.
