yeah, I am still trying to decide on a lens to go with the new cam. Don't want much overlapping...so, it's a reach. Thus, I try to get people's responses...just to see.

Given that the camera is a APS-C, it will be a little different than FF, but, still, nice to know.

Looking at your gear sig, i would suggest the 24-70L to fit your needs

My order was for:
Canon PSAUG06020 Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens
Canon PSAUG06018 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens
Canon PSAUG06005 EOS 30D Digital Camera (Camera Body)
Canon PSAUG06094 580EX Flash USA

I chose the 17-40 bec. it is a reasonable price to begin with and Canon is giving $90 back on the rebate so it is an even better deal.

I chose the 24-70 bec. of the many favorable comments made on these forums. My only concern is the weight of the lens. I was going to hold off on this lens..because of all the $$$$ I am spending, but at the last minute I changed my mind and decided to get it.

Just saw the 5D up at Costco.com and it's really expensive. I was surprised. With tax and all, it's way over what you can get at B&H. Just has the amazing return policy going for it.

I live in Los Angeles so the price difference on a 30d from Costco and a 30d from B&H is about $280. It's a substantial difference and so I ended up ordering from B&H... but I know what you mean regarding the return policy, it is golden. I've had to use it on two occasions and both times Costco didn't hesitate to give me a full cash refund..one time I brought back an HP laser printer that malfunctioned after 16 months and cost $400 (back in those days). Amazing.

Don't you think the overlap between the 17-40 and 24-70 is a little too much? Also, I realize one is low light, and the other not so 'fast' but seems a little odd to me...to get both of these lenses. Maybe just me, though...?

I do not think they overlap at all. The 17-40 is a great wide angle landscape/scenery lens. The 24-70 is great for portraits, low light events, landscapes too. Awesome lens combo

For those of you in Los Angeles, if you want to try before you buy Samy's Cameras has a great rental deal on weekends. Pick up on Friday after 3 and return by Monday before 11 and pay just a 1 day rental fee.The EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM is just $35 for a weekend rental.

I used this service to rent an entire outfit for my sister's wedding back in April (just $110 for a 20D, lens, 580ex, they even included extra batteries, photoshop elements on cd, camera bag, and a 1 GB CF card) and I will be using it in the future to try out lenses..the 70-200 is on my list

I have read about so many people on these forums that are happy with owning both lenses and since either can be used as a walking around lens, the overlap didn't worry me too much. I have probably changed my mind a half dozen times on lens selection since April (when I first decided I'd get a D-SLR) so who knows if these are the "right" lenses. Maybe a nice prime would be a good idea esp. for a beginner learning how to frame a shot so that may be my next purchase..once i am financially solvent again.

i think that's the future proof way to go, but if staying within 1.6 crop, the tokina 12-24 could've done the trick. great quality, better wide angle range and still $100 less than the L after rebate. the build quality and AF on the tokina might not compare to the L, but it can hold its own!

i was just there today. the one on fairfax. great store! i especially like that they have almost every model laid out with most of the lenses. they'll stick any lens on any camera and let you play with it for a bit.

my only qualm with them is that there are a couple of guys in sales that dont seem to care much for what i want, and prefer to make the decision for you on what to buy. one time, i came in asking if i could take a look at the xti/30D and the guy tried to get me to buy a d50 w/ tamron 18-200 lens.

Still reluctant, to try this pair on the 5D. Just don't know how it will 'work' for me? Still undecided on the lens...but the camera is on it's way.
