I know 50mm f1.4 is a must.. and I'm thinking of getting a sigma or tamron 100mm macro lens

what other lens should I consider?

Also, is it a pain in the butt to go from using zoom lens to all prime lens?

-canon 350d
-Tamron 28-75 f.28

thats not really answerable, i prefer primes so for me i consider them a good thing, but alot of people who started out on zooms might consider them a "pain in the butt". Only you can really answer that.

Have you considered the canon 100 macro? That is a good prime or so i am told.

The Canon 100mm f2.8 macro is a decent lens for the price.

I can't recommend the 85 f1.8 enough. I still hate the fact that I had to sell mine, best lens I've ever had my hands on.

I second the 85 f/1.8 too. I missed it ever since I sold it with my 350D

I would say get primes, but also get a good one or two zoom lenses, like a 24-105L or something.

Answer this question:

Do you really want to be lugging lenses everywhere you go, and having to change whenever you want to shoot something telephoto for example?

Canon EOS 30D, Sigma 30 1.4, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 105 Macro, 135L, 430ex, Lowepro Mini Trekker AW, Manfrotto 3001pro w/486rc2 and 804rc2 head, Manfrotto 681 w/ 3232 head.

I don't think you need to go that far. I started in medium format, so never used zooms even when I got into 35mm (the zooms back then were strictly "snapshot" lenses and not nearly the quality available today). When I went digital, the first lens I tried was a friend's Nikon wide angle zoom and I was awestruck by the image quality. I myself only get "L" zooms because although they're a compromise they're close to primes in IQ, I am a sharpness freak, and I don't want to carry an arsenal everytime I go out to shoot.

I only have two primes and of the two, my canon 100 f/2.8 macro goes with me everywhere even though I've got the focal length covered with my 70-200 f/4L. I always come across a flower, bug or bird that screams for that lens. Otherwise I use zooms.

Zoom suit a real purpose, but if you really want to carry an arsenal with you when you go out to shoot, that's fine.

skim, are you planning to get everything at once?

the choices are fairly simple - 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm, 200mm, then the long primes - 300-600 at the various apertures and prices, with and without IS, new or used - it all depends on budget.

Are you planning to keep your zooms, or are they going to fund the switch? I'd suggest initially buy lenses in your favourite focal lengths. Unless you want to challenge yourself and leave your comfort zone

why on earth would you want to go all primes? of course it's a pain in the butt. those black spots on your pictures is dust from all the lens changes.

I wouldn't drop all my zoom lenses add a prime or two if you must.
You could add as others typed about the 85mm/f1.8 .
Or the 100 macro model, the 135mm, there is even one around 100mm with soft focus settings.

way back when I first started photography, I had the 17-55mm and a 50mm... i found myself using the 50mm 90% of the time..

now that i got back into photog, i dont want to waste my money on a zoom and not use it
