First Hawk

Shot whilst on holiday in Corfu, I think it's a sparrow hawk, not sure though!
Not the sharpest - handheld at 400 and a largish crop - still it's my first Hawk.

Aye, it's a kestrel (a falcon) alright - sparrowhawks don't hover.

Many thanks Keith, Chris & Reyno. I was really pleased to see this hawk, I was stood on the balcony setting up for the sunset when he came by and I'm sure he looked me squarely in the eye (No.1) before drifting off:) just a pitty it wasn't a tad closer.

I'd be glad to have these shots, over here, at least in my area, the common name for Kestrel is sparrowhawk, merlins are pidgeon hawks, perigrines are duck hawks etc. So as far as I'm concerned you were right both times :lol:. I am still waiting for a good chance at the Kestrel. Well done.

Yeah, just a different naming convention on each side of the Atlantic, Trevor.

Over here, we usually differentiate between hawks and falcons in their common names so to reflect their different genera - so sparrowhawk is Accipiter nisus and kestrel is Falco tinnunculus.

Mind you, for that to work properly, we'd have to refer to them as "kestrel falcon" and "merlin falcon", I suppose!

Congrats on your first raptor shots! I hope you continue to have success. The names of the birds brought up a question (for me at least). I hope this is OK.

Are Sparrowhawks and Kestrals the same? I thought some time long ago (in a galaxy faraway) that the name was changed from sparrow hawk to kestral because scientists realized they were closer to the falcon family than the hawk family.

Can any intelligent personages help me?

you might have eliminated me with the "intelligent " requirement, you could be right, I think the original names just stuck with people in my area, same idea as the "northern harrier" is still called "marsh hawk" here. We rednecks here are slow to change.:rolleyes: Hope this helps a bit.

Kestrel and Sparrowhawk are different species from different genera - kestrel is genus Falco, sparrowhawk is genus Accipiter.
