I'm looking at a used Canon 85mm f/1.2 L FD Lens. I'm told that this lens doesn't work on an EOS digital camera. Does this sound right? I'd like to purchase if to use on my 30D, but if it won't work....

You'll need an adapter to mount it onto an EOS camera. You can't directly mount it. AF will be lost.

man... do i have to sa this twice in the same day lol :) FD lenses dont AF to begin with, and never will.

that being said. with an adapter you can get the lens on the camera, but you will loose a fair bit on image quality, and some light. you are much better off with an EF 85 1.8

I screwed up when I said that...

I forgot that the FD mount lens are all manual focus lenses (been awhile since I used the 50s on my old AE-1 Program...)

Okay, thanks! I've been shopping for an 85mm 1.8 when I saw the 85mm 1.2. I was certainly interested in the faster f stop. If it won't auto focus then I'm really not intersted.

Is the 85mm 1.8 the best for an EOS digital? At less than $400 it seems like it's a pretty good deal. B&H showed the 1.2 for better than $2000. I guess that this is not for digital too, correct?

the EF 85mm 1.2L would work on your camera, but is very expensive, and unless you absolutely need the extra light or depth of field, an unnesscisary purchase.
if you are looking for a good 85mm lens for long portraits, sports, ect. then the 85 1.8 is definitly for you. a great lens at a great price.

The 1.8 focuses faster too if you need it. IE sports.

Wouldn't matter comparing it to the FD 1.2 because it's a MF lens.

I meant vs the EF L. I would think that's kinda obvious...

No way. You'd have it tainted. And well...it's a cookie. I'd eat it even if I knew it was tainted...
