What benefit do primes have?

if the zoom lenses are the ones listed in your signature it's no doubt that the 50 is sharper.

zooms would be a better choice for you if you have enough light. the main advantage of primes for me is speed. IQ is good too but i use non-L primes and my zooms are all Ls.

I prefer primes for just about everything, but mainly for sports. The 85mm f/1.8 and the 100mm f/2 are my lenses of choice for gym sports. I appreciate their autofocusing speed and the sharpness of the images they produce.

if you want or need the very best IQ posible then primes win thats a fact, i use primes but do have the 17-40 love it.
iv missed many shots because i use primes and not had time to change the lens when a shot apears.
many zooms are very close to prime IQ and i doult very much that i could tell the diffrence between 2 shots .
it really is a persnal thing primes or zooms or both they each win one way or another
