getting ready to order this lens today and don't know if it comes with a hood. I don't use filters and would like the protection that a hood would offer.
What is the recommended hood for this lens?
Thanks in advance...
Chris

Only Ls come with hoods. The designated hood is the ES-71II

The front element is fairly deepset, I'm not over convinced that a hood would provide that much protection, it's a short lens anyway and the hood is light weight and not very deep either.

Personally I get Hoya Multi coated Pro 1D UV filters for all my lenses, even the kit lens. If for nothing else, they keep stray finger prints off the actual lens, and are easier to clean. I don't appreciate any image degradation whatso ever. on a $/ ounce basis my filters cost more than L glass by some margin.

I do also use hoods on my 2 L lenses all the time, but they are substantial copmpared to consumer hoods, and the lenses are bigger and heavier and easier to bash into things.

Yeah, I agree with Steve. You don't need a hood on the 50mm f1.4,
I've never had any flare problem with that lens.

I actually i have to argue that point. i have the 50mm f1.4 and hood and i think the hood is fairly deep for such a small lens. you really have to reach in there to get at the lens cap. the kit lens hood is very small. it's more like a ring than a hood.

Thanks for posting the picture of that hood, ChopstickHero. It certainly looks reasonably substantial too, much better than the thin little peice of over priced cr*p sold for the kit lens.

I still wouldn't buy one though - if i was worried about flare i'd get a generic rubber hood.

I have the hood, but for some reason I don't recall paying extra for it. Hmmm...

Here's a self-portrait (using 2 mirrors):

Unless you bought the lens used, and the hood was thrown in as a bonus, you most certainly did have to purchase it separately from the lens itself.

I find this hood to be very useful, since the front element moves to focus... this means that while a filter would provide some protection to the recessed front element, I like the fact that the hood also protects the moving front element from impact (thereby protecting the AF motor and gears). Also, the hood is not so deep that you cannot remove the lens cap with it on, so I just leave it mounted in a ready-to-shoot fashion almost all of the time.

Get the hood. It does help reduce flare.
