Is that a good lens, and a good price range?

Personally, I'd pass on it.

I would take it if you can get it for under $75 or so... It's not exactly a BAD lens for the money. It will at least give you something to learn with, and will expand your capablities.

This lens doesnt enjoy the best reputation, but for $50 it certainly expands your focal range. You will be covered from 18-300mm (except for 55-75) which allows you lots of opportunity to make the kinds of shots you want while you save for better lenses down the road. The auction doesnt close for a couple of hours so you should be able to find some reviews on it, and also find out what typical selling prices are for it.

Figure that it goes for about $149 on B&H (maybe it's more, I may be thinking of a different version). The lens will be sufficient for a lot of work, especially as you are just learning how to work with a telephoto zoom.

I used the non-USM version to take this:

I have it framed 16x20, so you can be sure that you CAN get good shots with it.

As long as you stay under $100 with your bid...it isn't a bad deal...if it goes over that...wait for the next one.

Just went to about 100, with 30 minutes. Someone will snipe it some more in 30 minutes, so its a no buy for me.
