I did a wee shoot for some of my nurses' kids - would appreciate some C&C.

Each one you learn a little something new - this one I learned that a large octobox is good enough and you shouldn't generally need the fill light. I ended up blowing out some of the photos too much - but maybe I am being a little to critical I dunno. But with just one light the lowkey shots came out brilliant (I fink so anyway).

What do you peeps fink?

Thanks in advance,

They're not that bad. :) I'm not an expert (by far) but the B/Ws seem a touch blown out even for the high-key theme.

It's hard to critique an entire set. Try posting maybe few of the best.

Cheers,

Tom

Yeah, great captures, but the B&W are quite blown out...

One thing I noticed is the posture of (hard to be specific since there aren't any numbers) the young teen female that is on page 4. In all the shots where it is just her, she seems to be slouching quite a bit. To me, many poses look as if they would be better as outdoor shots.

Lighting looks maybe a little overdone and I think the stark contrast of white/black background is making them appear a little sterile.

I think you did especially well on capturing the younger of the two with the purple dot dress. She is darling. You got a couple good ones of her older sister too.

In general, I think it's a really good attempt. At least you are out doing it...I am NO WHERE near ready yet!

You might try throwing a couple of the photos into attachments so that people don't have to browse off the forum. It might help you get some more remarks.

Yes, attache a couple. SmugMug allows you to copy a link for just that purpose.

But there aren't that many to review. For the most part the color images have decent but bright lighting and framing. The subjects are smiling and looking at the camera. The slouch on the young girl is probably her being selfconcious about herself. I ran into it in a recent shoot with a young girl about that age. Overall they look pretty good. They should be pleased. I do find the B&W to be a bit too bright, nearly washed out.

Personally I like a bit more shadow and less highlights in my portraits. Actually a lot more shadow, better defined. I would suggest you crank your lights down.

Thank you all :) For some reason I never got any messages saying people repied to this - go fig!

Titus - I have had some differing opinions - some people are saying they are already underexposed, others say avoid shadows, some (like you) say more shadows - I really dunno what to do. I guess I just gotta get a feel of this.

More problematic is the fact that I am going round to people's houses, so setting up takes around 30-40mins and then the shots and after that I can't really experiment with different setups. Plus I live on my own so can't get any models to practice on at all. One day maybe I can setup a permanent studio and experiment like that, but I think that is a little far off from now, much is a pity.

Thanks again for your advice - I will surely come back with some more soon and you can bum me out again :) But hey critique is part of the learning process - and I got LOTS to learn!

Mercy, nothing to be bummed out about. They are pretty good. My personal preference is more shadow. I like Rembrandt lighting actually or perhaps some of this type. (external link)

I'm a long way from it myself but I keep trying. We also go to folks homes to shoot portraits. You do have to get your set-up time down but that comes with practice. As too getting models - get a foam head or some sort of dummy to practice with. You can practice your set-up and not get any complaints from the subject.

Certainly keep shooting and posting.
