This lens was actually the real reason I bought my 70-200mm f4 L. I was making do just fine with the gear I had, which was all pretty cheap stuff. One day in the camera shop I asked to try it out, because I was hoping to get one for nature photography and such. After one look through that L glass I just had to get some. There was no way I could afford the 100-400 L, so I tracked down a used 70-200 f4 L. I'm really hoping to get the 100-400 by next summer though. It's an awesome lens.

A great and versatile lens.
Unless a 400mm prime somehow falls in my lap, I'll never get rid of mine.

Cheers

Great lens, is great from 100mm to 400mm, but it does need light.

I think you've probably got the message now from all the 100-400 fans, it's a very popular lens and most people who have it love it.

I love it too and wouldn't change a thing except maybe an update to the IS would be nice but that's no big deal. Super lens.

Havent seen much talk about this lens on the forums and I was thinking about getting it...why doesn't it seem to be a popular lens?

er.. pardon my tone, but what rock did you climb out from under?

Seriously I think this lens has more threads about it on this forum than any other, and is most definitely the highest rated for what it does as seen here;

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=59931

... where it is voted higher than all other competitors combined!

A quick search for the lens revealed 17 pages of (x 35 = 595) threads with 100-400mm in the title!

This lens gets a lot of good press, and I cannot argue with the images posted here - BUT - I rented one, and I couldn't get it back to the store soon enough. It was soft at the long end, and didn't impress me much at all. Add to that, it wasn't as long as I wanted (400mm), and you lose AF with a teleconverter, and it just couldn't find its way into my lens inventory. I don't put much faith in the "dust sucker" claim, but I just don't like the push-pull action, either.

So it seems there are some that "swear by" this lens and some that "swear at" it. I fit among the latter. I hope and pray that Canon soon comes out with an upgrade that is longer, faster, or both.

My 2 cents.

Have Fun,

Rick

Nice...how wonderful...from a mod at that!??

Geeeesh did a search for '100-400' and didn't see many threads with this lens in the title! Sorry don't make it a point to read every thread in this forum....how ignorant I must be!?

But great shots all, I can't wait to order this baby!:D
