My friend is just getting into photography and he is interested in buying my 50mm f/1.8 lens, do you think it is worth selling to upgrade to the f/1.4 version or do you think I should pick up something different or just keep the f/1.8 since it isn't a really expensive lens...

depends..
the 1.4 is better, there is no doubt about that. However, the 50 1.8 is Good! I have one, I use it, I love it. I found no need to upgrade (not because of financial reasons, I just didn't want it)

I have one and it's a joy to use with a manual focus screen. I've stopped wanting a 50/1.4 once I got the ability to focus it precisely.

given the rest of your kit, i think you can safely sell it to him so he can enjoy it as much as you probably have and more than you probably do now. then you can look at a different one to replace it. the 50 1.4 is a great lens. or the 35 1.4L if you really want a step up and a half. beward of L prime fever though. my 300 2.8 is making me contemplate trading in my zooms for primes.

If you use your 50mm a lot I'd upgrade as the 1.4 is much nicer to use - if it's not a lens you use really often you could sell it and put the money towards a lens you would use more...

Is it a MK I or a MK II? I've heard a lot of people that sold the MK I and regretted it later. Even though you're thinking about getting the 50 f/1.4, it's couild be a lens that you keep around and use in slightly adverse conditions. A beater so to speak. That said, probably not a big deal either way.

Its' the same lens. MkI mkII

I went though a couple of them and now have the plastic MkII. The motor is the same. The accuracy is the same. The optical formula is the same.

I own a MK II myself, but I've heard the MK I feels sturdier and has a better build quality. That's the only difference though.

The 50mm f/1.8 II is such a low cost lens I fail to see why anyone would buy a used one and give up on a warranty.

I'm also a bit against selling anything to a friend - lend it or give it away, but not sell, especially for THIS lens. finanially there is so little to gain, you can't easily ask a friend to pay a fair price, and you're not even sure you want to part with the lens!

I'd suggest lend it to your friend so thay can see if they like it, if they do, they can shell out the 80 bucks for their own copy, and if they don't, you've done them a favour. either way you still have your lens, and your friend!

Ok, thanks everyone for your input. If he still wants it, I will hold off from buying something else for little while because I am not really using the 50mm that much anymore and I like Billginthekeys idea for the 35mm f/1.4 but right now I don't want to spend that much right now, maybe in a few months...
