Ok so I bought a Rebel Xt back at the end of July and am really getting into shooting, it came with the kit lens (18-55 f3.5-5.6s)
I don't have one particular area I devote too I try to do it all, scenary, art style shots (colours), close ups and macros, action, and night.
My dream is to eventually take pictures of the moon that look good
My first store bought lens in august was the I do have Canon 75-300 f/4-5.6 III lens. It does a white light for moon shots, which is ok for now but I gather in a few years time I need to get a good 300 mm f/2.8 and a 2X modifyer to give me that 600 mm.

My last lense in September was the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8, and I love it..really love the way it captures the light. Sunset shots have gotten better.

But now I find I'm taking more macro photography and I was thinking of trying the CANON EF 50MM/1.8 AF II
It's cheap at just over 100 bucks which is good cause I'm still paying off my camera...

I'm not sure if CANON EF 50MM/1.8 AF II, or should I just wait and try to get a better lens...

Please forgive me if I say anything that sounds stupid, I'm trying to learn and understand but sometimes I forget or it may take a little while for me to absorb the concept.

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm basically looking at going forward and continue to make progress in the months ahead.

Ok I just read this page

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56747

and am looking through the message boards now...this will help tons..

Still if there are any specific observations based on the areas Im trying to get better at.

My strength is my eye (of course every photographer would say that)...my ability to judge light, but my weakness is focus..I do keep it on auto most of the time because I think the lens is likely to do a better job than me.

But that may come with the territory of being new.

As for the moon shots, you should be able to get alright results with the 75-300 you have. My best results have come with about 1/40s @ f/8. I shoot with a 70-200mm with a 2x converter...so I'm at about 400mm. A steady tripod is the key here...and manual mode. Just shoot at a bunch of different exposures and see what works.

As for the 50mm f/1.8, it's an awesome lens. I love it. It's not macro, but would work with extension tubes for getting macro shots. And you'll appreciate the wide aperature when you start adding tubes that reduce your light intake...

In doing my reading I found out that 2x converters work great with a 2.8, but will fall short for anything above that.

Actually my pictures of the moon are not too bad with the 75-300, I do use a tripod but the problem is I don't get the desired detail...it doesn't have to be precise but something a little more then just the white light.

Yeah I was thinking that with the extension the 50 mm would make an excellent macro lens rather than buying a seperate one...I have no idea what kind of extension I should need though...

do you have any ideas?

Instead of the 50mm f/1.8 and tubes you may wish to consider the 50mm f/2.5 macro. A very decent IQ lens that won't break the bank. True, it is limited at 1/2 lifesize but that may do you, at least for now.

Thanks for your suggestion...

the 50 mm was pretty cheap as compared to my other lenses (I bought it a few hours ago), the tubes aren't so bad and I like the fact that I can use them with multiple lenses

Actually right now I got my eye on the 28 mm 2.5 for Buildings and architecture (for xmas)...I think I can really take some amazing shots with that.

It just can get kinda dark in there with tubes and your range of focus is very limited. Many like tubes, good luck.

You may wish to consider something wider for architecure. Perhaps 20mm or wider.
