Sometimes you will find a certain spot when shooting outdoors that has it all. Great soft lighting, nice background, natural hair light and maybe even a kicker light. In the image below the mask of his face is lit by bounced sunlight off of some white clouds at camera left (daylight.) This light is coming through a spot where there are no large trees blocking the directional light. The kicker light, which is highlighting the left side of his face, is from direct sunlight coming through a small hole in the canopy of the forest. I took this image about 5:30 P.M. last evening. There are several reasons this light is so soft even though it is sunshine. For one, the sun loses its intensity as it gets nearer the horizon, so it can be used even in the summer. Two, the sun in the fall and winter "up north" is not quite as intense as it is in the summer. Three, it was slightly diffused by the yellow leaves of some trees.
