Is it true that this lens or the 70-200 2.8 IS turns off when put on the tripod?

Is the 100-400 IS fast enough for sports in Oregon? Its overcast here a lot.

The 70-200 f/2.8 IS has the version of IS that know's it's on a tripd, so keeping it on will counteract any mirror slap vibrations.

You'll have to turn IS off on the 100-400 though.

I'd say the 100-400 is fast enough for sports work. You might have to bump up the iso though. Choosing between the two would really depend on what range you'll be most often shooting at.

Hi photolistic,

regarding your 70 200 question, it depends on the version, some newer version of the 70 200 will know when on tripod on will shutdown the IS automatically

I am also about to buy a lens for sport and I am facing the same dilema that you are, between the 70-200 2.8 with 1.4x or the 100 400

I have decided to go for the 100 400 since I need the extra reach and the 2x seems to really degrade the performance.

Now regarding the "speed" I think 4-5.6 should be fast enough if you shoot during the day/afternoon even if it is overcast day.

I am also trying to build a 100 400 faq gathering different answer I got from different forums, you might find here (external link) some stuff interresting for your case

Cheers

remember shooting with a slow shutter speed with IS on does not prevent motion blur from moving subjects, so it may be of limited use in sports.

Pete is bang on in regards to the IS.

The 100-400 does not do too well with sports if it is overcast, sometimes even if you up the ISO you still do not get a very fast shutter speed. If you are in good sunlight it will work just fine.

It is a great lens, I love mine.
