Hi Paul,
I really like #2, you exposed the white very well and got him at a great angle, the background add a lot to the shot IMO as it helps protray the motion of the bird,

I certainly agree with Clare about the second shot with the background, it adds much more interest.
Both are captured well with good composure , light and focus, well done.
