My fiancee of 9 years and I are basically "eloping" to Kauai, Hawaii on January 3rd (or 4th, or 5th...). Since there won't be any guests, we're having a hard time justifying hiring a full fledged wedding photographer for the event, but we would like some nice photos of ourselves and maybe even the ceremony ( ).

It almost seems like I ought to be able to hand the "right" person my 30D (17-85 and 70-200 IS lenses), pay them a nice fee for a half hour's shoot, then do all the PP and printing when I get home.

Does anyone ever do this? I'm sure there will be lots of offers to do it for free if I just pay the travel and lodging expenses, but what if the "right" person is already there? How would I go about finding them?

Keep in mind, that in most cases, you get what you pay for. Your equipments's fine, but the eye behind the camera matters most.

Either way, good luck!

Pay Maui Kim to come over and do it for you. $19 each way flights with GO airlines between islands. I just got back from there, my honeymoon. I did just that, I handed my rebel over to another family member who had some photography experience and it worked out great, but this was before the trip to hawaii. It can be done. You may want to just approach some people. Everyone there is very friendly, and always willing to snap some photos when needed.
