Is it possible to use the Speedlite 430 EX with a softbox (not talking about the tiniest softboxes now), or is the 430 just too weak to even think about it?

If you set the softbox relatively close to the subject like for a head shot, it should provide more than sufficient light. If you're talking about a full body or group shot and it's your only light source with maybe a reflector, then you might need to up your ISO at the expense of some noise. ...Leo
