Is it possible to use the Speedlite 430 EX with a softbox (not talking about the tiniest softboxes now), or is the 430 just too weak to even think about it?

Sure you can use the 430EX in a softbox but depending on the application, it may not be very efficient. If you set the softbox relatively close to the subject like for a head shot, it should provide more than sufficient light. If you're talking about a full body or group shot and it's your only light source with maybe a reflector, then you might need to up your ISO at the expense of some noise.
