You need to call the company from whom you bought the lens, and complain about its condition. State that you're not happy that a piece of sensitive optics/electronics was left outside in the rain unattended, and that you require a replacement. Notify them that - save for its unacceptable delivery location - it was fine, but you're not satisfied. Leave them to take it up with the courier, since they are the account holder with the courier company, not you. UPS will not care what you think, as you are not their customer. However, they will care what the merchant thinks, because they are UPS's customer.

When you buy something remotely, you're outsourcing the shopping and carting to the merchant. It's up to them to get the goods to your house in satisfactory condition. They outsource the carriage to the courier. That's how these things work, and that's how you need to follow it through.

Whatever happens, I hope you get a lens with which you're satisfied.

I would now contact the company you bought it from and say i had not recieved it.

because the ups guy left it without getting a signature they have no proof you actually got it so you could get another or credit.

Of course you do need a bit of a mean streak to do that:evil:

I hate when delivery companies leave expensive stuff out side it could have been stolen

Mean streak? How about thief streak? Come on, why would you want to take advantage of a situation like that? I can certainly understand sending it back and exchanging it for a dry one, but trying to get a 2nd lens for nothing is just downright wrong.

hi all
i work(drive) for Ups

there should have been a note posted through the front to let you know.
It could have been stolen easy if it had been there for a few days.

while this is what the driver is told to do, it dosent always work in all towns, there are people who do drive around towns and look for those notes on the door (we call them shoppers) when they see them the park and steal the boxs. it happens everyday. so sometimes its better not to leave a note.

UPS will not care what you think, as you are not their customer. However, they will care what the merchant thinks, because they are UPS's customer

this is wrong too..to Ups both are customers they(we)do care what both think. we almost never hear from the shipper of the package. But we do hear from the person who got it if its messed up or late.

UPS must have changed their policies ecause they never used to leave it without a signature

they did change their policy a little..now its the shipper who must decide if they want someone to sign for it. kind of silly to have to get a signature for a phonebook or a tshirt, and it is up to the driver to decide what to leave and what not to.some shippers like b&H,dell, gateway all require a signature and cant be left.

I would now contact the company you bought it from and say i had not recieved it.
because the ups guy left it without getting a signature they have no proof you actually got it so you could get another or credit.

it is stealing Ups will require you to get a police report for something stolen from your property before they pay for it.plus you address will be put in the computer as a address that will always require a signature even if it is a silly phonebook or a dvd.

You'd need more than a mean streak, you'd need to be a thief. The fact that you don't like the way they leave your packages doesn't give you a license to steal.

The recipient is covered for the lens. Just call the company and tell them what happened. UPS will pickup your wet lens and ship it back - the shipper will then send you a new one.

Its up to the driver's discretion whether to leave a package w/o a sig. The safety of the neighborhood, , the availability of a suitable place to leave it, etc play in the decision.

Climb down off your soap box put your dummy back in your mouth

IT WAS A JOKE Hence the little devil face at the end of the sentence

Incidently the driver has no say over whether to leave the package without a signature if the sender has requested one and personally having worked for UPS for 3 years i would never leave a package exposed in such a way THATS COMPANY POLICY

Easy, fellas, let's all remain friends.

One thing I've failed to see reading through this post is whether the LENS was actually wet, or just the outer box. Do they still pack lenses with those desicants (sp?), those little packs that absorb moisture?

If the lens was wet, or the inner box, there's no question I would have returned it. In fact, if the outer box was soft and soggy, I would not have opened it. I would have returned it as is.

To avoid confusion in the future, just my opinion, it's better to use the ;)

That's a clear indication of a joke or kidding.

I've found the best people to deal with for me seem to be FED EX or the postal system (Canadian for me, but if somebody ships USPS, it comes by my regular mailman either.) I do find it annoying that I can't buy my mailman lunch or something due to company policy because often enough he's a very nice guy who does things out of the required for me (i.e. when my tripod bag and books came the tax was $30, and he can only accept cash (company policy), but I didn't have any cash so my mom went to the bank and he came back later.)

Well, is the lens wet? I'm sure everything is in proper working order. Canon usually places their lenses inside a plastic bag in the original box, so I'm sure the lens is fine. I just couldn't see myself getting my UPS guy in trouble over something like that. He was probably trying to do you a favor by leaving the lens for you in back of your house.

You know, you should probably find another forum. Compared to many internet forums, this one is very civil...people don't call each other names. As a matter of fact, yours is the first posting I've seen where someone has stooped this low.

Over the past several years of owning a group of mailing centers, I've shipped and paid for upwards of 100,000 packages through UPS. Anything can and does happen with shipping. But as long as the proper amount of insurance is paid and the package has been properly packaged, the shipper is protected.

If we all read your posting wrong, correct us (as you did), but you don't have to go so far as to call someone a dimwhit!

This guy is right. This forum is very civil and one of the best I have ever seen on the net. I must agree with him though.

Some of the comments remind me of a friend of mine. Whenever you tell him of something that you are unhappy with he immediately starts suggesting lies to make it sound more worthy of correction by the other party.

How did the camera box inside look? Was it or the lens or paperwork inside wet? You should fully inspect the lens and try it out. You can call the manufacturer's tech support line and ask them what they think. If you think it is OK but you are still uncomfortable that it got wet and think it may bother you in the future then call or visit the seller and explain what happened and tell them you want a replacement. You shouldn't have to settle when you think it is genuinely damaged.

If you claim you didn't receive it then you are a thief stealing it. You can justify it any way you want but you are still stealing it.

Jim

I always use Fed-Ex when given a choice if it's important. UPS hasn't required a signature here in Atlanta for many years. Doesn't matter if you are home are not. Doorbell rings, you go and open the door, you see the UPS truck driving off and there is a box on the ground. When they left my laptop laying on the sidewalkwith rain coming, that was the last time I shipped UPS.

What ever COMPANY POLICY this has been the last 10 deliveries made by UPS:

Drive up, jump out, grab package, walk up to my door, drop package from knee high, walk away.

Thats the standard here. Its usually the same driver but I've seen three drivers use this exact same method. No knock, no door bell, no "gently" place package - nothing, just drop and go. They've done this with $100 memory cards, $1300 DSLRs, computer components - etc etc etc. I live in a neighborhood in which the newspaper isn't safe.

I just felt like chiming in with my experience as well.

Switched to Nikon . . . Thanks to all of you that made my sale a success! Enjoy your new gear!
