I like it. The DOF is nice and the subject is sharp. Though I wish there was more light illuminating those big eyes. Some fill flash perhaps?

Very nice. I tend to think that kids get bored of parents taking their pictures. Maybe to end the boredom, you might get him a cheap P&S and allow him to take pictures with you...and 'of' you. Maybe that may 'brighten up' his mood a little.

Actually he was using a Rebel XT with a 17-40 on it. He was getting bored and tired. Plus he was hobbling along with a cast on his right foot, broke ankle.
Yet he still wants to go out and find something to photograph.

As for me, the newb...flash was fired (430EX) but, at 214mm probably wasn't enough, especially with -1ev and -1fec

All in all, we had a good evening at the river.

I think the amount of fill flash you used is perfect for this shot. It's really nice but I would crop the sides off some.
