A friend and his band have a gig coming up on the 28th. The club they are playing at is not small, but not big either, with decent lighting. I already have the 50mm 1.4, which i love by the way, and can afford 1 more this Thursday. I'm going to have both of these lenses anyway, but since I can only get one before the gig, which one should I get first.

30/1.4

Faster, and allows you to shoot slower shutter speeds. Also, it gives you a wider perspective, to absorb the atmosphere. The 50/1.4 is already quite telephoto on a crop body.

Too much gear...

I second that.
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is perfect as a normal lens on a crop body

Not only is it a comfortable prime on a crop body it is one awesome lens. Focuses quiet, fast, and is one of the sharpest primes I have used. Atleast my friend's copy. Only passed by an 85mm 1.2L and 200mm 1.8L. =)

I own both too - I think really you should own both...I bought the 85mm first and the 30mm second, I would do it the other way around too if I had the chance!

I do not have the 30 yet, but will. Altough I love the 85 and would never part with it but find it a bit long for portraits on my AP-S sensor, I wish I had gotten the 30 first, then the 50 1.4, and then the 85 1.8.

Enjoy your purchase.

The sigma 30mm will be my next lens. I agree with people whoe feel that the 85, while a great lens, is a little long.
i also think the sigma will be more versatile as a standard prime too.

And the fact that it comes witha case and a hood are just icing on the otherwise very attractive cake....

I just got the 30mm 1.4, today and will use it tonight...

Postings from the venue concert show will be posted in the Performing Arts section this weekend...provided all goes well with access to a good shooting location by the stage...

Couldn't decide me too...

So today I've done...

BOTH!

30 Sigma seems to be tack sharp even wide open....

85 seems also, and will be perfect on my 30D!

Let's try :)
