I haven't seen the lens properties for this (twoeaglesmarcus) pictorial of the chick in red vinyl. I don't see the wide angle perspective in it at all...

yea, who cares about optics!!!
It's all about the noise.... and maybe a red ring....
:)

I hope you mean picture noise and not lens noise...I can modify the first.

While red rings are not in my list yet...but I like quality and should find something in the mid range and long range for my needs from the L group...

It doesn't have HSM! Agh. Deal breaker for me :( I'm addicted to USM...

I hope I can live with it...It's the lens size and purported quality that sold me on it...Not to mention a super wide 94+ degrees...

The 20 is a very nice lens. Great for those landscapes and city stuff. Very very wide on FF. The corners are crap on the wide apertures, but a nice stopped down lens. Relatively cheap, too.

some examples

Looks good. None of the crappy corners I sometimes encounter. Might be because it was shot with a 1.6 crop camera.... Might be I need to send the Sigma to Sigma. :p

Gotta have a wide angle for these here, Pennsylvania rolling hill landscapes...tree lines interest me very much too...

sometimes there a pretty large flocks of wild turkeys in the field or groups of deer that would look great all together in one picture...I'm planning on scoring some of those shots no later than this fall and winter season...

Outdoor photos should be no problem for the most part, since there is plenty of light to work with most of the day with this lens...

Kinda late for this, but I see you're using a 30D. Have you thought about getting wider, as in the Sigma 12-24? 20mm is wide, but not nearly as wide as it is on FF. I mean 17mm on a crop isn't even as wide as 24 on FF. Just some thoughts.

It's not the last of the wide angles I plan to get, because I may have a need for indoor room decor photography...

I can't use the 12-24mm lens yet, at a local theater concert venue, because of potential restrictions on anything other than a fixed lens... and long and telephoto and zoom are not permitted in...

I may try another of these - the last one I had was fine stopped down, but fell short of the 16-35L in terms of sharpness. I'd really like to move to one fairly fast prime at that range as I rarely shoot wider than 24 with the 5D anyway. It's a shame to have all that money tied up in a zoom that doesn't get used all that much.

Pondria on Fred Miranda's forum has the 20/1.8 Sigma and uses it on his 1Ds II with good results. I've noted that distortion is low on this particular Sigma.

Corner performance still requires stopping down a good bit, but I haven't found an ultra-wide, prime or zoom, that didn't require stopping down to get the corners sharp. That fact is not as bad as it might sound as the types of situations where sharp corners might be desired are likely to also be situations where stopping down might be desired (landscapes, interiors, etc.).

Hrm...so basically, you can only have wide primes? What kind of shots are you supposed to get with that? A 135L is prime (npi) for theater work.

This, middle of the pack, wide angle lens will cover the areas that I get comfortable results in...Thereafter, I might go to a second lens or a back up camera with a second lens..

It shipped out to me today, so there is no need to ponder returning it...I know there will be lots of uses for it.

Yes, essentially the fast lenses are the ones of choice here.

The idea is that the longer lenses look professional, and the performing acts have complained about pros being in the audience with long lenses...
So the solution was established by the venue, that only personal cameras, for personal use only can be brought in...They also need to be no more than the typical SLR with a fixed lens.

Photography is a hobby for me, and I sometimes share my photos with the venue management... Since I live right down the road from the venue, and I expect to attend lots of shows annually, therefore it's best for me to keep it simple.

My results are limited to the lens I choose...85mm, 50mm, 30mm or 20mm...I used to be able to walk around, however others complained... now I just stay in my seat and shoot from the best seat I could buy for that particular show...

He must have used the 20mm lens somewhere else in his porfolio...I'll try and check his site out for the lens work...It will give a good perspective of framing, distances to and from subjects etc, with the 20mm....
